Return of the chicken wing.
« on: February 26, 2005, 11:37:22 AM »
Honestly I do not believe I will ever be able to get rid of this malady I have.  I don't know where it came from but it's like a chronic disorder that is affecting my game.

I took some video of the Absolute and the Classic today but didn't want to show my goofy delivery again.

In defense of the chicken wing, it's not like I can't strike or hit spares but it's sooo annoying especially when I never used to do it.

There are no coaches here other than the YABA coaches and even the pro shop guy said, "DIZZAM, why you crook your arm liddat, bro?"

Anyone wanna take a trip to Hawaii and give me some lessons?

BTW, I sold 3 Absolutes today.  Well, not directly.  A few bowlers saw me rolling it and liked it.  So I directed them to my fave pro shop where they made their purchase.

If anyone would like to offer any recommendation again, feel free to do so.

Bomb, I have the same problem at times and when I do, I don't even know I'm doing it until someone tells me. When I chicken wing, my arm gets out too far from my body even though it might only be 2-3 inches. This isn't a cure, but what helps me to control it to an extent is two things:

1. I am RH. First I check and make sure I walk straight to my target. If I drift left, then I am left of my target at the foul line and chicken wing ball to the right trying to hit my target because I am too far left.

2. I pretend I have a towel under my arm and don't want to let it fall out from under my arm. This one helps me more than anything because it keeps my arm in next to my body and closer to my sliding foot at release. (I do actually place a towel under my arm some times when I practice)

Hope this helps.

At the risk of drawing comments, I don't think you're winging it at all. Elbow releases straight, swing near your face is common for getting around the ball. When your elbow bends, ball is already gone.... I've seen much worse. Heck, I AM MUCH WORSE....

The chicken wing is at the top of the backswing, which is cut off, so you can't see it.

Nope, no chicken wings, I've eaten them all, with BBQ sauce.

It looks like your hand is on the side of the ball through the entire swing.  This makes it easy for your elbow to bend (it's a natural motion for lifting a suitcase).  The fix?  Keep your hand a little more behind the ball.  A bent elbow is infinitely more uncomfortable when your hand is behind or inside of the ball.  You may have to figure a way to get your hand around to the side of the ball at the point of release, but I don't think it should be too hard.

You are correct, Sir.  I need to learn to keep my hand behind the ball.  I guess I will have to think about it until I get used to it.

Watching just now, i noticed that the you dont chicken wing the ball until the top of your backswing. So shortening the bk swing, it seems would help, watch it for your self a few times.

You will notice that as the ball goes a little higher in the back swing the arm starts to chicken wing.

Your vid is about the same as mine, we just have different timing, and you get the ball closer to your ankle on release.

Any closer to my ankle and I'll have a broken/bruised ankle.

I can try a shorter backswing along with opening my hand a bit.

Looks like to me that you start your ball a bit too late (3rd step out of 5) which causes your swing to be late and the chicken wing comes from your swing trying to catch up. Try starting your ball by pushing out on your 2nd step. Should help you get your ball to the bottom of your swing a bit sooner and eliminate the need for "catching up".

PS. I'll be in Hawaii for the PBA Regionals on Kauai and at Schofield April 17-25th if you want to meet up.

Yea i have talked to bomb300 about that a few times via pm, he used it for a while i guess, but didnt take any vid of it.

I think even working with his current timing, if he cut the backswing down he could be more in time with the ball.  Even so he dosent have a problem scoring, so "if it aint broke, dont fix it"

After viewing your video, I now recall going thru this before with you. Remember, you weren't and aren't even begining your swing until you were/are already into your 3rd step of your 5 step approach. I brought this to your attention and you agreed and you said you got your push away off sooner and that took care of the problem. Remember?

Along with that I beleive not keeping my hand behind that ball is also causing my elbow to bend.  I haven't taken any new vid yet but I went down to a 4 step and I do push the ball out on my first step.

If all else fails I will splint my arms with a few 2x4s to keep it straight.
