Need help to make decision
« on: August 16, 2014, 03:26:00 PM »
Could I get some feedback on the new Big B pieces to go between the mastermind and melee? 90% of the time the mastermind does not see any action. This year probably even less due to a new teammate throwing a line similar to mine.

How does the Melee Cross, Rude Dude and Grease Monkey POW compare to each other and which way should I go?

I have been told by one the Rude Dude will be stronger than the Melee Cross, but have no clue for the POW.

Either the Melee Cross or the Ringer solid (blue) should fit between them.  I don't think you'd want to lay either one out too strong though.  They are both a ton of ball for the price.

Lane, how much difference can one expect laying the Melee Cross out the same as the Mastermind?

I can only guess, but it may be fairly close at first.  The number one factor in ball motion comes from the bowler (speed, revs, tilt, rotation, etc), then surface, then core design and layout.

By now any Mastermind probably has many more games than a brand new Melee Cross, so initially they could be close.  What I really like about the Melee Cross and the Blue Ringer are their symmetrical cores.  For me that means "forgiveness" on my not-so-perfect releases.  I am currently perfecting the not-so-perfect release ;).

if you layout the cross same as a mastermind it would be different because one is symetric and one is asymetric

The melee cross would fit very well between the mastermind and the melee. My melee cross is about 4 - 6 stronger overall compared to the melee with more continuation. Also, the melee cross can handle medium to heavier oil. The Rude Dude would have a similar reaction to the melee cross. I haven't seen the Grease Monkey Pow in person, but looking at the stats on the web site, I would think that it would react similarly to the rude dude and melee cross.

Thanks for the replies. My debate is still  ongoing. What my best bet may be is to wait for my original Dude and Grease Monkey to be punched up and use them a bit before deciding. The Dude will be my first symmetrical DV8 and has been recommended by many.

My melee is my go to ball. I absolutely love it and have had great success, but when the lanes are soupy I change to an asymmetrical core but would like to have the consistency of symmetric.

Then again, I guess I could get another melee and tweak the surface/layout to handle a bit more oil than OOB surface I have.

My feeble mind cannot decide!!!!

If the lanes get "soupy" as you put it; then why dont you use the Mastermind?  I understand you said that you have a teammate throwing a similar line.  Have you thought about doing a cover adjustment to make it a little cleaner through the front part of the lane?

I was looking for an additional piece for med/heavy conditions as one house I bowl has tendencies to seem heavier as the weather changes. Would like that additional piece to have symmetric core.

I do use the Mastermind (and a Ruckus) above the melee. Both of which have asymmetric cores. Originally the Mastermind was 1500 + polish; a suggestion from my pro shop. Used it - and hated that surface. After about 20 games then went to 800 and that is where it has stayed. But ball that is more for tourney's / sport patterns.

The Ruckus for me is cleaner through the front than the Mastermind - especially at 800 of the MM.

I don't mind surface changes and will change surfaces, but I do not want to change back and forth. If I only shot THS patterns, changing the surface on the Mastermind would be the best option.

That makes sense.  You can still get away with an asymmetric as long as the intermediate diff is pretty low (.005 or lower).  It is the asymmetricals with intermediate diffs around .010 that you should steer away from.  Bit, it sounds like the Melee Cross would fit nicely for what you are looking for.

I agree with TWOHANDS834! If you are looking for a stronger reaction to the Melee, then a Melee Cross would be a great option because it would fit between the mastermind and melee.

Thanks for the replies. It is greatly appreciated. If I had seen this before visiting the pro shop yesterday, I probably would have had it punched then. But now, will wait for the next trip. Time to save some $$$$$ up!

Once I am able to get the Cross purchased and enough games on it for an opinion, I will let you know how it goes for me. To be honest, I hated my Melee until I got a bit of track on it. But now the Melee has been my favorite ball in quite some time due to its control and how versatile it is.

My only small concern has been the OOB finish for me is best on med to med dry, in which most of the leagues are in this area. A surface change on my Melee may cause it to not be as useful when the lanes start to transition and possibly force a ball change instead of chasing the shot in.
