Need Slay/r Suggestions for me, please help.
« on: January 01, 2004, 07:12:06 AM »
So,

After 2 weeks straight of conditions where I have nothing weak enough to play anywhere near my comfort zone I've decided to pick up the Slay/r.

The conditions I would be using it on are a THS using prodigy on synthetic lanes. Second shift, medium oil to 35' buffed to 45'. What I'm finding is that by second game I'm standing all the way to the left dot throwing across 4th arrow with my Pink Raspberry (sanded to 800 with 1 minute in a lustre king for a light polish).

I simply dont feel comfortable playing that deep & when I try to play twig with my pearl urethane or flatten out the wrist, the spottiness of the track just makes the reaction too inconsistant. That's why I'm looking toward the Slay/r for a coverstock that will hold better than the Red Pearl Hammer, but not overreact like my solid resin.

So here's what I'm looking for. I want to be able to play the Slay/r comfortably in across a dry track & have a nice smooth recovery in the back end. What I've found is with my lower revs very long pins (5") & pearl resins tend to not recover soon enough for me. So I'm wondering what length pin you all might suggest & if possible, a few suggestions on a drilling.

Thanks in advance for your help!

My SlayR is drilled with the pin above and slightly left of the ring finger, and the cg under the ring finger. It gives me good length and a strong rev in the back-end. I am playing this no further left than 14, any further inside, and it doesn't finish strong. A good up the track ball.

My only concern would be a pin over bridge drilling not moving soon enough.

I had a pin over bridge drilling with the CG kicked out on my igniter & time after time I found the ball simply wouldn't finish. Yet I put that ball in the hands of someone with a more revs & it finished very strongly.

Is there something about the slay/r that would combat a reaction such as the one I described about (lower RG or something like that) or do I have just reason to be leary of such a drilling.

Thanks again for your response.

That's what a Brunswick product specialist told me about the SlayR.  I wanted to drill mine pin-above, but he recommended pin-below, with a pin-to-PAP distance no more than about 4 1/2".  He said that the SlayR tends to be almost too clean in front, and a pin-above might cause the ball to miss the break altogether.

My SlayR (still undrilled) has a 2" pin;  I'll probably drill it with the 2E layout off the Brunswick drill sheet.

Hope this helps.

It helps a lot & pretty much confirms what I suspected.

Thank you!

when i spoke with rick benoit about this ball he really emphasised two things:

don't go to this ball too early---it really needs dry to get it to move. he also advised me to stay with my typical drilling patterns( label leverage or positive label shift ).

he was right on both counts.

Well, here's what I ended up going with & we'll see what happens.

We decided on a much shorter pin than I'm used to at 1&1/2". This should get the ball into a roll earlier. Along with that we'll be putting the pin at 3&3/8" from pap just below my ring finger. However, in order to keep it as controllable as possible I decided to swing the CG in toward the palm. I've got my Blue Carbide drilled like this & really like the controllability it affords me. Hopefully it will still be a strong enough drill to get the ball to move.

The drill pattern I went with is most similar to 1E ont he drill sheet, with cg kicked in toward palm a tad more.

Thanks again for everyone's help.
