Ball weight...
« on: June 10, 2009, 11:18:35 AM »
Have been bowling with a 15 lb UI for the past few months and it has pretty much been my go to ball.   Contemplating purchasing a 16 lb UI.  Rationale...extra weight could possibly slow down ball speed allowing for back end reaction when the situation is needed.  People with more experience with different ball weights, do you have any noticeable problems going from a 15 to a 16 lb ball or visa versa...what are the advantages & disadvantages? Pretty much a stroker with a ball speed of 16-17.

I have both 15 and 16 pound balls, for me I always start with my 15 pound balls before my 16 pound balls. It is easier for me to go up in weight than to go down in weight. Going down in weight I seem to be to fast most of the time.

I've never switched weights but I've usually had a ball speed consistent around 17-17.5 mph and where I bowl that is bad. This past season I really worked to slow my approach down some and was able to do the same for my speed. I also shorten my approach by half a step in distance.(scooted up on the approach)

Where I bowl they wax the approaches and from the first arrow to the gutter is OB. So I had to slow my feet down to keep from killing myself on the approaches and with the slower speed consistently could move in and cover more boards. Averaged 5-pins higher this year.

I believe that most guys will release the 15lb. ball better (there are rare exceptions) which can translate into "forgiveness" on the lane.

As long as you're executing well with the 16, it will be an advantage.

Another factor to consider is that you may be able to manipulate a 15lb ball more, thus giving you more revs, to match the change in speed.  At least I have noticed that for myself, your mileage may vary.
