I hate my twisted :-(
« on: June 13, 2008, 05:51:22 AM »
Soooo i punched up a twisted, and i listened to everyones advice, go strong pin to pap, and use greater than 45* on the MB. This ball OOB is way to strong, it reacts stronger than my ultra, which is a LOW rg hybrid solid/pearl.

The layout is roughly a 4" pin to pap for me, and the MB at 60*, the Ultra is layed out pin above ring 4 1/2 in pin to pap. Difference in the balls is prob about 10 boards. I don't see a stronger push from the Medium RG core of the twisted.

Wish my camera still worked so i could make some comparison videos...

Soooo baring some surface changes what other kind of drill should i try? Gonna try 2k and 4k no polish, i don't like the way polish pearls react for me. I have a fury pearl as well, and i like that reaction better than the twisted.

I'd try 4000.  If that doesn't work maybe 500 or 1000 with a little rough buff over it.

My proshop guy actually told me his Ultra was cleaner then his Twisted with similar layouts.  I was surprised by this, but took his advice and bought the Ultra.

Good luck with the Twisted.

I found that my Twisted was weaker than my Ultra... 2 board difference though. I got rid of the Ultra. I'd rather adjust the two boards with the twisted. I like it better. My twisted is at 4000 grit abralon. No polish on it.

The Twisted will respond to friction quicker than the Ultra. On some shots it will hook as soon as it feels dry, where the Ultra won't jump off of the dry like the twisted. Don't give up on it!

Still love my Twisted Fury. It has won money for me in pot bowling for 2 weeks in a row now.

My Twisted Fury is the weakest ball in my bag. Even weaker than my Ebonite Clash.
I happen to like that though. It gets so much length and great backend recovery.
I have mine at 4000 grit with polish, and a control layout.

Pegleg,

If you like it like that great! It's no wonder it's the weakest because to bring it back to box you use 400 then rough buff. Yours is at 4000 plus polish. That makes a huge difference in reaction.

Indeed it does make a huge difference. I haven't altered the surface on my Twisted Fury. Using it as it came NIB.

Thanks for the advice, surface change time, wooo! I'm thinking 4k no polish will work great for me, i had a rising with that surface and it was money.

I can't say that I was super impressed with my Twisted when I first got it but it's been about 3 months now and becoming one of my favorites. I've tried mine with box finish, 4000 no polish, 4000 with polish and my favorite seems to be the Ruff Buff box finish. It worked well with all surfaces but seemed to be most effective and useful on more conditions with the factory. I have mine drilled the same way as my Solid Fury which is 5-3/4" pin to pap with a 45 degree mass bias. I'm definitely a fan of the Fury line!

I liked mine at box finish a lot.  It had been the best ball I'd ever thrown in my life.  But when I got it resurfaced my driller stopped at 2000 with polish instead of box finish, and I hated it for its under/over qualities.  I felt it was too condition specific at the time.  I could use anything else and be better off is how I felt.

I recently got it to 4000 polished and I love it again.  It's not as versatile or strong as when it had the box finish, but I need a skid/flip ball anyways.  It gets down the lane and given dry enough backends, it gives me a great reaction.  My layout has the pin under the middle finger with the CG directly to the right of the pin(2-3 pin) and the MB about 4 o clock and 3-4 inches relative to the thumb.

if u dont want a big over reaction
drill it pin above bridge with cg kicked out to the right of span and a weight hole if u need just above midline about 3inches out
love mine !!

Moe,

Seeing the difference between 2 balls that are not supposed to be HUGELY different, I wonder if the difference isn't being caused by the amount of oil you using them both on.

The Ultra with its lower, RG, SOlid/Pearl combo AND its stronger Mass Bias rating should be earlier and smoother than the Twisted. SO either the amount & length of oil is better for the Ultra, given that you seem happier with it, OR it's too heavy for the Twisted, showing up in a a lot of saved energy and a huge backend and overall hook.

Since these balls aren't really far apart, with similar drillings, there might not be enough difference between them to use them as go-to balls. If, however, you differentiated them with a little of both, drilling & surface, they could be far enough apart to use them as go-to balls.

I'm making some assumptions here because I don't see how you drilled the Ultra and I'm not sure under what oil patterns & lane surfaces you tested both of them. I also wonder if by sanding the Twisted to 4000 grit, you're not bringing it closer to the Ultra, rather further apart.

Remember also the other item: house blended oil patterns can make ball differences seem either much smaller or much larger than they actually are.

Also try finer polishes on your Twisted as well as rougher (4000 grit) finishes.

Good luck.
