ball recommendation
« on: June 21, 2009, 12:37:35 PM »
My gf has a Brunswick Power Groove Black/Purple Solid, she has a good release creating strong rotation, thus the sharp backend. I was wondering what ball would go longer? I was thinking an avalanche pearl or solid. what would you recommend? She throws it fairly slow, I would say 10 mph. If u need any more info, i would be glad answer more.

She could also try the Slide and go with a really long drilling on it...

I second the Avalanche Slide with a low flaring layout and some polish with a slip agent in it.

With that slow a ball speed, I'd suggest a different drilling like a 2x5, not a skid/nap ball like the Slide. Maybe the Avalanche Pearl which is less skid/snap or another solid with a 2000 or 4000 grit Abralon matte finish to help prevent or at least reduce skid/snap.

Tough task. With that low speed, getting the ball down the lane without running dead is the biggest task. As a ball, I'd also vote for a Power Groove Dry/R. It has a high RG that saves energy well, and the coverstock is - despite being a pearl - pretty mild and smooth.
While the Avalanches are basically also good balls, I'd think that their low RG cores might deplete energy too quickly, and with a weak length setup these balls might not move at all.

Another option could be the Urethane Groove. If she has some hand, despite the low speed, this could work well for her. It is also VERY smooth, but lacks a real core, so its move will just come from ten sideways rotation. But a friend of mine who also plays quite slow amkes this ball look good on lighter conditions.

Other options I'd check are the new urethane Ogre and Storm's Natural, also a urethane ball. Both should be smooth and work on lighter conditions, and IMO fit well under a solid Power Groove.

After some thought, I have to agree with charlest regarding layout. I do believe that with the slower speed you'll need a pearl reactive to enhance her chances of carry. The Avalanche Slide, Pearl, or a Power Groove pearl will probably be good choices. At 10 mph it's hard to know whether one is better than the other.

Is her current layout pin up or pin down, and is the ball polished, and what grit is the surface at?  My wife has the same exact problem with her Messenger Ti, about 10 mph and a good release with lots of backend, but struggles to keep it from going brooklyn or through the nose.  Hers is pin down under and just right of the ring finger.  She has the best luck when I keep her ball regularly polished with a couple of coats of Storm Reacta Shine, which is getting the ball towards 1500 grit, from its' original 500 grit cross-hatch polished with Degree 2000. Once the polish starts to dull in the track area is when she really struggles, so I'm just re-polishing by hand after every 3 games, and she is doing better.

Try a good polish and don't let it dull out, and see if that helps.  If her current ball is pin down, maybe try a pin up layout with a longer pin buffer on whichever ball you end up choosing.
