New Pro-Am Ball not OI
« on: October 17, 2005, 04:00:25 PM »
I inquired with the PBA about the new Green/Yellow PBA Inferno

quote:
Thank you for contacting the PBA.

This year’s Pro-Am ball is the exclusive Brunswick PBA Inferno and it is the blue/green color that you can currently view on our website.  This ball is a different ball from last year’s ball, both in terms of performance and in the color.  Here are some of the specs for this year’s ball:

-         Ball Finish: High gloss polish

-         Coverstock: Activator

-         Hook Potential: 150

I hope this information is helpful.  Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to assist you.

Thanks again,

So, then I would guess the new Pro-Am ball is actually based on the Ultimate rather than the Original Inferno?

A 150 hook potential with high gloss surface? Nope. Unfortunately, I cannot find the ball anymore on the web an the links are dead.
But either the surface material is NOT original Activator (I doubt that any pearl reactive can yield that much hook on the Brunswick scale), or the surface is dull and it is a solid like the UI. There must be a mistake.

Here is the link of the pic of the ball (not a really good picture of it)

http://www.pba.com/schedule/pro-ams.asp?TID=1446&CID=1024#

I honestly thought that the PBA would have gone with elite bowling balls since they have their oil pattern balls done exclusively by elite.

Ah, thanks a lot for the link.

O.K., pic is not sharp, you are right, but for me the ball looks like a solid one´- could be an Ultimate Inferno. But polished AND 150 hook?

The PBA balls ARE made my Brunswick - all of them (plus any other Elite ball) are made up by Brunswick stock equipment, coverstocks and cores. In fact, it is some old(er) stuff, not Brunswick's state of the art material. Check, for example, the "all new" Atomic Core in the Alien which is also used in one of the PBA balls. And then have a look at http://www.brunswickbowling.com/uploads/images/1203/control_zone.pdf . Nuff said.

There is just a PBA and/or Elite label on them, and a BIIIIIG price tag. So, the diffrerence between a PBA and Elite ball is not big, as well as in performance to Brunswick's balls.

If you guys want a better picture of the ball, go here.  http://www.hawthornlanes.com/tournaments.html#pbaopen  Scroll down a bit and there is 2 images of the ball.  It does say Inferno on it.

Just did, and *he* said it was an Ultimate Inferno, only polished and with different colors...

150 hook + solid activator = ultimate inferno. Just because they polish the ball, the hook rating is not going to change.

Maybe it uses the Activator Advanced used in the Smokin instead of the original Activator cover stock.

Another guess into the blue: Activator(+) solid with Rough Buff surface?

No.  But just think of it as a mystery.  A mystery you won't solve, but will forget once you drill it up and start throwing it.

If you ain't throwing Brunswick, you ain't maximizing your abilities!

So does that mean Tom Tomaras was just "out of it" or something?  (in reference to the post saying that Tom declared it was an OI")

Isn't a Ultimate with a high gloss polish the same as an OI.  Same specs just different OOB surfaces.

No, the OI is a pearl and the Ultimate is a solid.  Two different classes of coverstocks aren't made the same with the similar surface preps.
