Nexus vs Defiant
« on: December 31, 2011, 08:39:52 AM »
Looking to pick one of these up, not certain which one.  I'm looking for something for mid to heavy conditions, I've seen the Nexus, ball worked great.  I have an Alpha Max, it was hit or miss, so I'm leary in buying another Brunswick ball.

In any case, if somebody can compare the two, I would appreciate it.

Take care,
Elvis....

The Nexus is a great ball. You wont be disappointed with it. Hard to compare to the Defiant since not many people have tried it yet.

The Nexus for me is better than the Alpha Max is. I have the Nexus being a few boards stronger than the Alpha and it is all on the back. The Nexus is very versatile. I have had the surface as low as 500 grit and as high as polish. Even at 500 the ball got through the fronts very well and continued on the back part of the lane with no problem. If you decide to go with the Nexus, you will not be disappointed.

since the Defiant does not come out until 1/10/12  --- you may need to wait until there are more reviews to compare. for now it will be just the staffers. until then you may just have to look over the specs on both balls, and look at the different video's on both balls. i personally will be getting a Defiant. but i have had better success with ROTO GRIP, so im sticking with that brand. everyone has a brand that just seems to match up better with that persons style, with me, its ROTO. after you do some research, you can decide.

Can't really fault staffers here 'cause that's what they do for their product.  I'm not that familiar with Adam (no offense intended) but Mr. Carter has been very helpful with me the two times we've spoken about Big B products.  I've got a Nexus Pearl and I am VERY happy with the performance of this product.  There's a LOT of success with the Solid in our area.  My intention was to get a Nexus Solid for Nationals (I'm guessing I'll be able to find a drilling/surface combo that I'll like regardless of the pattern) but I got a chance to take advantage of a pre-sale on a Defiant.  I drilled it 60x4.25x50 and left the surface OOB.  IMHO, the ball has all the overall hook, possibly more, than a Nano did without the dropoff in performance to coverstock upgrades.  My Nano seemed to lose significant reaction throughout an evening whereas the Defiant seemed extremely consistent from game one all the way through game three.  I'm a righty and left only one 10-pin in a set and left four blower 7-pins so there was NO energy burnoff with the Defiant.  The only 10-pin I left I deserved and the four sevens were quality shots.  You'll need to closely monitor your speed with either of these strong pieces for they'll turn a high flush shot into a 4-pin with only about two or three tenths of a MPH of speed variance.  I think you'll see a LOT of these balls in Baton Rouge as first out of bag.  Let a few more buyers take advantage of a Defiant, get the info from as many Nexus and Defiant owners that you can, and rest assured that both of these balls are great orbs.  Put it this way, if the two of us were choosing, and those were the two choices,  I would not mind picking second.

I haven't seen anyone throw the Nexus solid where I bowl, but have seen the Nexus Pearl being thrown and I must say the Nexus Pearl appears to be second to none. I was really impressed with what I saw with people throwing that ball and if I were to buy a pearl ball tomorrow, the Nexus Pearl would be my first choice.

Thank you, 230!

I have friends on staff with Storm and Roto. The Defiant looks good to me, but I have personally used the Nexus solid and it is an awesome ball with more back-end pop than I've ever seen from a Brunswick solid.

You would probably be safe with either one. Just match up the cover with what you're seeing.

The shape of these two is different. The goal of the nexus series was to provide a clean motion through the front o the lane with a strong turn on the backend. Mission accomplished. This is a great ball and I keep mine at a low grit for heavy oil shots. The defiant is another attempt at replicating the ultra popular shape and motion of the cell. In that regard, they succeeded as well. While the nexus will give you more roll and hook, the defiant will give you more arc and smooth motion to the pocket. It just depend on your preference really. I have videos of both on my shops Facebook page and on YouTube @ DeadWoodProShop. Every high end ball will hook and roll great. The real choice is what shape you are looking for.  Good luck, and I hope this helps. If you want a little more back end on the heavy shots, consider the 919c. Hooking monster
