Monster Slay/R today?
« on: February 15, 2012, 04:43:08 AM »
How strong would this ball be today? How would it compare to my Onyx Vibe that is drilled 4.5" pin to PAP, pin under. Same layout is on the Monster Slay/R. Would this ball be stronger or weaker than the Vibe at the same surface?

My Monster Slay/r is about equivalent to my slingshot, just a little smoother and weaker.  A hair weaker only, but weaker.  On heavy oil I can use my strike release to shoot the 10 pin with it.

Hmm, interesting. Maybe I'll pick one up.

It would IMHO be much weaker than an OV, and different. The Slay/R's cover was very weak, I guess as weak as the PG Dry/R, just coupled with a low RG mushroom core. Effectivelym the ball goes very long on little oil, and responses quickly to the dry, revving up. It was advertised as a dry lanes ball - I would not use it on total toast with no head oil, but for late THS patterns and anything light, it is still a valid option. From what I know about this ball is that it can be touchy to release flaws, due to its low RG core. Errors magnify - the later Power Groove Dry/R was IMHO the better package to the same challenge (and cheaper).

It was a medium-light oil ball with a Quantum-type mushroom core. I found it very versatile, because of its mild coverstock yet low-ish RG core.

My best memory of it was one day during a fairly competitive league, the house shocked everyone by using a medium-heavy oil pattern when we were all used to bowling on medium-light oil (when we were lucky). Many people using particles ball and very strong oilers like the Scorchin Inferno, were totally lost.
I found a tiny bit of dry going directly up the 10 board, which was highly unusual for me. It was fun outscoring the house hacks that night. with the 210-220 average "champions" shooting 550 if they got lucky to my 660.Wish I had entered more pots that night.

Today, it would definitely be a light to maybe medium-light oil ball. That mushroom core will help a lot.
Don't be afraid to drill this ball pretty strong - it never overreacted.

Here's its info sheet from Brunswick:

By the way, I didn't know it was harder than average: 78 - 80.

Also of note is the breakpoint shape: 90!!!
From my use of it, I would have guessed it would be about a 70. My release tends to magnify a ball's backend and this one was very mellow. Interesting.

I agree with you about the breakpoint shape 100%.
