Light Oil Ball Survey
« on: October 09, 2005, 03:20:44 AM »
$$$ aside, through personal experience, which do you think is the best?

the dryr, power groove reactive, the punisher, or the slayr?

Remember these balls are all different, so i guess i'm looking for the best all around ball for this general condition

You are asking a very open ended question.  Describe "light oil"....

Dry heads?
Dry mids?
Screaming backends?
lighter volume but longer pattern?
hook at your feet?

Do you change hand positions for drier conditions?

I still think urethane or xxxl is the best for the desert.  Nothing reactive will do.  I've had the PG resin, slayr, and my wife has the dry/r.  The dry/r appears to be the weakest.

If there's a little out there, DEFINETLEY the SlayR. I've never had a mid performance ball hit so well.

I've heard nothing but good things about the slayr, so i'm leaning towards that right now, thanks for the input

I bowl a travel league, so we face all sorts of varying dry/light shots from house to house, week to week, so i guess i'm looking for the most versatile ball that falls somewhere in this conditions range, once again exact definitions mean nothing because i see all different kinds of light and dry shots.

The Trooper, like stated above, is an awesome drying-out lane ball. Lite oil or dry lanes this thing handles like a champ. Dont be afraid that this baby wont hit because I'm amazed at how well it actually does so. While I'll admit it doesn't hit and carry as many off hits as does higher end equipment but when it's  flush you hear an explosion. I was using mine last Thursday and when I hit flush in the pocket, this ball exited the pins around the 8-pin area.
It's smooth and continuous, qualities essential on spotty or drying lanes. Someone with few revs might have trouble with this ball carrying though as opposed to higher rev individuals out there. JMO though.

Out of the balls you listed, I think the SlayR is the best of the bunch, followed by the Dry R. Remember, personal style plays a big part in all of this as well. The Power groove reactive is a much stronger ball than advertised. To me, it's much closer to a medium ball, than a dry lane ball.

They probably rate like this:

1.SlayR
2.Dry R
3.Punisher
5.Power Groove

Personally, I like these for dryish lanes:

1.UltraSonic
2.Desert Heat
3.XXXL
4.Mercury
5.Tropical Storm

A lot of people like the Sahara, but to me it's a lot like the Power Groove. It depends on your style and the exact conditions, and it's much stronger than advertised.

Speedburner, I have a Slayer and a Storm Big Hit Pearl Drilled Identical(Pin 2" to grip center full roller). They also have same cover prep(1000 grit abralon pad followed by track clean & polish). There is a 4&1/2 board difference with my feet on the same shot between the two(the big hit being the weaker). They make a good 1-2 punch for dryer conditions.

I had some decent luck on the very dry with a slate gargoyle.  Cleared the heads easily and a nice arcing backend.
