Laying out a smokin for a customer. It probably wouldn't have been the ball I would have chosen for him to achieve the desired reaction, but its the ball he brought in for me to drill. I took him out on the lanes and watched him throw a few shots with his old equipment. After determining PAP, I looked at his layouts on his equipment... He had a stacked addiction (with a 4" pin to PAP with pin next to ring finger and MB next to thumb with weight hole) and a stacked element au79 (4.5" pin, above ring finger with a weight hole). I would say his ball speed is slightly greater than his rev rate... probably classified as a high end stroker.. I would estimate about 18 mph ball speed and around 275-300 rpms. The track on the ball was fairly close to the fingers /thumb, and the PAP measured out to be 5 1/4 --> and 1/2 ^.
After he threw a few shots and we talked, he explained that his addiction was very arcy and he generally used it for heavier oil, playing up the boards.. and his Au79 again was very arcy..and he used this ball for house shots and/or other medium oil conditions. He wants the smokin to "compliment" the AU79, but give him a more angular look.
From what I have seen, the smoking has decent length build in.. and if the backends are dry is fairly angular. With the higher speed and low-ish rev rate, I'm not sure how angular it will be for the customer, but should be more than the au79.
As far as layouts, what would you suggest? I'm thinking something similar to the 1L layout, but shifting the cg far enough out to leave sufficient side weight to use a "flare increasing" weight hole. Sound reasonable or should I go with a pin under fingers (as above may cause too much length)?
