Not that I have hands on experience, but I think the Smash Zone would be the first ball I'd pick to replace an Inferno. It's roughly the same core and roll pattern.

I'm not sure how close the reaction is but you can find the Inferno remakes on eBay.

Rattler is same cover and less diff but will be close, I have the Smash Zone pretty good ball needed to haze the shine down very slightly with a white scotchbrite pad.

Now it reads much quicker and goes through carrydown better, it lost some of the extra snap it had which was actually good.

The Zone Classic has the same coverstock. If you drill it right (it has an asymmetric core), you can get very close to the same reaction.

I believe that since the Rattler has the same cover, you could take that and use a stronger drilling from what you had in the Inferno to get a similar "look" on the lane.  Remember, coverstock alone is 70% of ball reaction.

I agree the Rattler may be a good choice but, since it is not available yet only time will tell. In terms of the Smash Zone, it has the same core but the Enmotion coverstock is much different than Activator...not worse but, different. It is not a one for one replacement albeit a good piece. The Zone Classic was very close but, hard to find these days. I would suggest grabbing one or two of the remakes and keep an eye on the Rattler.

Same here. Even though the SZ comes pretty close, it handles IMHO less oil than the OI and its coverstock is more responsive to the dry/allergic to oil. While it moves in a similar manner, it handles OOB less oil and is IMHO a bit itchy. Taking the polish away, either with Rough Buff or a high grit Abralon pad, makes it a nice medium condition ball, though.

The Rattler is another option - OI cover with a slightly weaker core from the BVP/Performance line. What I heard from the local test staff who just got the first balls, is that it was suprisingly angular for a Brunswick ball, snappier than the OI.

Dizzy,
I agree, I think that is the nature of the Enmotion coverstock. I have the same issue with my Twisted Fury Perl. Overall, I actually prefer the SZ, I think the stronger core complements the coverstock better.

I you do want to go to the remakes that are available, it is exactly the same ball. If not, you will surely like the Rattler.

Rob,
Thanks for responding. One curious question...how close in reaction is the Rattler to the Sidwinder Reactive. I have both versions of the Sidewinder and really love both of them. If I'm not mistaken the Reactive ended up being a hybrid. But, it seems to me that since the core is the same, I might expect a hard continuous move from the Sidewinder Reactive and a snappier more angular move from the Rattler.

Am I on the right track here?

Fran, you're on the right track.

Freakin, pretty much right on there except I see the Ultimate still much smoother downlane, even when shined. You are correct that a Rattler would need just a touch stronger layout, but the results look very similar.

Mine wasn't...in fact, it wasn't similar to *either* of the original Infernos that I had.  Both the later pour and the remake were substantially pushier and sharper at the break than the first Inferno that I got back in 2003.
