Sanding the Absolute?
« on: January 18, 2006, 01:20:52 AM »
If I take my Absolute to 600 grit, do I need to go down to the 320 it starts at, then go to 600? And what would be the difference in taking it to 600, then applying rough and buff, as opposed to no rough and buff?

Well if youhave your AI polished right now you can
start is at 400 to get the shine off. Then go to 600.
Apply the rough buff with the 600 grit scotch brite pad.
If you just use a towel with the Rough Buff the ball will just polish up
more. Unless that is what you want.

No, I'm trying to get away from the polish. The burgandy scotchbrites are 600 right? Does using the scotchbrite keep from taking it to 1000 grit? (grit of R&B?)

i have mine at 600 grit with green scotch brite.
then used 3M Rubbing Compound as a finish (Columbia 300 uses it).

268-247-203 = 718 last night on christmas tree pattern.
sick reaction, i can do anything with it, flatten out for early roll, or spin it up for a later read and bigger reaction.

highly recommended!

According to the Ruff Buff bottle and my personal experience, each increment in sanding, 220 to 320, 320 to 400, 400 to 600, etc. should add about 2 to 4 feet of length to the  ball before it starts to hook.  Some people need the extra length because of slow ball speed or higher revs.

Applying ruff buff definately changes the surface.  It makes the surface less porus.  In other words, it might make a 600 grit feel like an 800 grit.

kdameyer-that's what I was wondering. If it will be finer than what I start with.

One benifit that I forgot to mention is that a ball sanded to 800 will
still eat oil from the lane if it is a fresh sand.  A ball sanded 600 and
then buffed so that it is close to 800 grit will not eat as much oil but will still give you traction.
