So my alley likes to put down a very long and flooded shot sometimes for out tuesday night league. Usually I'll just use my Scorchin' and throw a bit slower going from the 10 board out to the 5.

Well today was a very interesting condition...

The first game I hit the pocket just fine on the first 5 frames leaving a 10 pin once. I should mention, the other team was using only plastic with pretty high speed. Well after the first game, the oil seemed to have spread out to the last 15 boards on each side and the last 10 feet of the lane.

I could not figure out this condition to save my life. I had about a 1 board area to reach the pocket. 1 board to the right and the ball would not turn AT ALL. 1 board to the left and I hit the head pin dead on. I tried using some lighter oil equipment going across the middle, but it would hit the edge of the oil and no be able to make the turn.

Would a particle ball have been able to get through the extreme carrydown I saw tonight? because my Scorchin was just not cutting it. Have any of you experienced this?

Move right aim at the pocket in a direct manor adjusting target right depending on amount of backend. Like above poster stated if oil moved back it had to come from somewhere so watch out your not burning up some early and hitting DOA.

Bob's reply is very good.

As for the type of ball expecially Bruns. This advice was given to me from kotm a few years ago on heavy carry down. Find a Bruns. Navy Fuze. High load particle high RG for length thru burnt heads I kept it dullish trizact. This ball was the best I ever used on carry down. To bad it cracked.

Slow down your shot and really think about what you're doing. Don't accept missing the pocket. Logically figure out what needs to be done. You need to be able to throw a little gentler and a little more outside, probably.

Learn to play this shot too. It's just as fun.

But I agree, it can be a struggle on these. It's hard to practice under conditions like this.

Solid (carbide type) particle or solid reactive ball, non-polished surface.

I am with Leftyhi-trak: move towards the gutter, slow down if necessary and try a down-and-in shot. Roll the ball gently, without too much side rotation. The idea would IMHO be to find a line on which you can send the ball straight down and have physics "override" the lane conditions. I had good success with this and my sanded Xxcel recently in my traveling leugue, where powerful play was a no-no because the lane was sickly slick and carrydown set in after the 1st game. Huh!

You might not strike a lot with such a tactic - but it is a success if you can stay in the pocket this way, score occasional strikes and prevent splits or ugly multi-pin spares, so that filling frames is easy. This way you will still score well and remain competitive, even though it is not a spectacular style.

although swinging the ball 10 to 5 seems like a straight shot you're still swinging the ball. sometimes a true straight shot may be what's needed on a slick or tight lane. a dull, high load particle ball would also be your equipment of choice. brunswicks new mammoth sounds perfect for that.

well, eventually I did end up doing what you all suggested. I tried slowing the ball down at first and throwing it toward the pocket with a weaker ball. The problem was that the inside got pretty dry quick, so once the ball got out of the oil, it took off. I eventually ended up increasing my speed and basically throwing the ball straight. I was just curious if that was the way I should have gone and it seems that it was.

Smith was playing STRAIGHT UP 15 with a shiny ball. Worked great for him. I've since done the same thing on long oil shots - it works great!

The shot you describe is not a flood if you can open the lane up.

I still have to slow my ball speed way down and increase my rev rate to achieve this. To put it in perspective, my paradigm, which is now pretty dull will not move on this shot, maybe 3, 4 boards max throwing parallel to the channel.

id say two choices. which pretty much what everyone is saying here.
play straight up, or go with something dull. your gonna need something
that gives you a consistant read each shot. if it was me i would throw
something in a dull finish.

next time you see this type of oil, during practice, try attacking it thru the middle. play it tight with a really strong ball anywhere betwee 25 down to 10. if you ball passes 10 it will never come back. if this doesn't work, play with a med ball stright down 15. if all else fails, drop you ball on 2nd board on towards pocket.

I bowled on similar conditions last summer. A good bowler suggested I play a more direct line, standing almost to right gutter and rolling ball over 3rd board at arrows. Played mostly behind ball and used Ambush. This scored in 190's when other people had trouble breaking 150's on a few tough nights.

thats the key right there, and i was a witness (and a victim) to it today.

granted i play on a house shot, but i think they modified it to about 40 feet and laid it down much thicker and wider this week.

ive never left so many 10 pins in a series EVER, i must have had 12 today.

i used my absolute inferno and played straight up 10 behind the ball, and a little above 15 MPH, the ball would skate, under 15 and it'll turn up early.

one guy shot 747, and against my team, we lost all 4 games, but i felt i (and my team) played the best all season even though my scores didnt reflect that.

we bowled our guts out today, but still 0-12 in the past 3 weeks (damn 100% handicap), but thats a whole different topic.

getting the ball into a roll is key on longer patterns, lorok hit it right on the head, its all about carry and pace when you line it up.
