Question on Power Groove & Slay R Versatility.
« on: May 31, 2004, 04:31:44 AM »
Here's my problem.  I'm bowling Thursday and Friday nights in this one house that has the most EXTREME Wet/Dry shot I've ever seen in my life.  It's almost seems like there's a 40-1 ratio out there, that's how extremely dry outside 5 is.  On top of that the backends are ON FIRE!  I meant scorching.  I believe the house only runs a 29ft buffed to 38 and the rest is an unbelieveably crisp backend on a pretty new synthetic surface.

The best shot fot most of the people in the house(who don't really know much about the game, they just throw it) is sending the ball far right and watching it come back for all kinds of trip 4's and 9's and what have you.  Everything I have seems to be too sparatic(Blazing Inferno), too aggressive(Command Zone Arc and Savage) or too much in the midlane(Vortex 2 Solid and Nitro R2).  I've tried a surface adjustment on my rollier equipment from last thursday to friday and it didn't really help much.  555 on Thursday, 589 on Friday.  The only ball I can use to tame down the wet/dry seems to be my Teal Rhino Pro.  The only thing is, it isn't quite aggressive enough to start out with until the track breaks down.  Friday is a second shift league so I can start out with it and stay on line for the first 18 frames or so but in the end I'm making drastic moves or piking it up the 10 board at 18-19mph.

I was looking at something like a Plum Powergroove or Slay/R with a wet/dry drill in it.  Maybe pin under or over the middle, with the C.G kicked right, weighthole on axis.  I just have no idea how they will react to the shot since the Slay/R seems to be all core on a very weak cover and the Plum Groove is an aggressive cover on a weaker core.  If I get two Powergrooves or two Slay/Rs how much versatility will I be getting with two different drillings?  Will they go long and arc no matter what kind of drill I use?

Oh yeah, the reason I want to get two of one ball is to have one to start out with on the fresh wet/dry on thursday over top of my Rhino Pro, and one drilled weaker to go under the Teal Rhino on Friday Night.  My stats are in the profile.

Both the balls you mention are skid flip. I'd go with something from the Sonic series or something else that will arc and keep you in play.

louie, the slay/r is not skid flip, in my opinion. BUT, choosing from those 2 I would say the slay/r. It can be drilled to roll a smooth early arc, or a lengthy hard arc. I would go with the slay/r, just my opinion though. Louie, anything is skid/snap for you, and your 2 fingers

Haven't thrown the Slay/r myself but the ones I've seen have gone really long and made a left turn. I've thrown 3 differen't power grooves, including the plum, and they all skid flip. IMHO you don't want a skid flip on a wet dry.

TBK25,
Come bowling sometime. I'd like to see your improvement.

Dee, what house are you talking about?  Also, tell Ron that I've been busy and I was in Dallas last week when he called.  You guys home yet?

If they are really that wet/dry (i.e like Cap), then you need to go with more agressive balls with rolling type drills (0* or 25*).  Keep the pin 2" or closer to the PAP.  This will blend the lane out some and give you control off the pattern.  Since this is a Brunswick forum, an Ultimate Inferno is good if there's enough head oil, or a Blazing if not.

like anthony said and just my .02c.

I bowled on a fresh Wet/dry for the first time since Since I returned to bowling.

the problem is the over under if you have hand. What I found to work is to go straighter up the oil line and get a ball drilled to setup up in the midlane and take the backed out of play.

I how ever have only used 1 reactive in that situation and liked it. It was a short pin and I placed the pin under ring and cg 1/2" negative. pretty much a 5 x 5.5" the core had no flip block and was very controllable.

other than that I have gone with less hand and 5 x 3 drillings and have had good reactions with fresh.

I also have had a tendency to prefer light to med load particles in this situation as they blend the dry well and read a crisp backend with enough entry angle to carry well.

On Over/Under I wouldn't go with a reactive ball at all -- they are too skid/flippy. If you're leaving 4-pins and 9-pins, you're getting too much angle. The only reactive ball I would even consider would be the Ultimate Inferno, and that's only if you left it in the box condition.
The best way to even out that shot is to go with a dull particle ball, then find the right place to stand and bombs away! As for drilling, something that revs early would be great, because it would also help to tame down the back end reaction into more of an arc shape. If you find that this hits a little too flat, polish up the surface just a tad.

You weren't unlucky when you left that corner pin, so shut up about it already!!

Hey, Tony.  I'm back home.  I'm bowling at Riverdale both nights.  I don't know if they changed the shot from winter league or it's that typical summer shortage of oil that this area seems to see every year, but it definately looks and plays alot different than it did in the winter.  I don't ever remember the gutters being as dirt dry as they are now and the backends seem cleaner than ever.  The head oil does stay up pretty well, I'll admit that.  So maybe a weak drilled Ultimate can blend it out or maybe something like the new sanded powergroove since it has a pretty high diff.  Maybe I'll talk to Gary about getting a Danger Zone blank or Command Zone Arc blank if he has any left.

Well, I'll be heading down there tonight to watch a little of that doubles league so I'll let you know what I think.   I know Riverdale can be very over/under at first before any carrydown so maybe that's what you are experiencing.  RTR was 2nd shift so we had quite a bit of oil in the middle.   Maybe you can swindle Cristina out of her blank Command Zone Arc she has in the basement
