Power Groove Sanded
« on: September 27, 2005, 04:59:59 AM »
I just got my Power Groove Purple/Teal sanded, and was wondering what kind of drill would go best on it.  I currently have a PG Pearl thats drilled pin over bridge, cg stacked and I love the reaction I get from it.  Should I go with the same drill on this one, or try something new?

What type of reaction are you looking for?

I suppose I should have said that to begin with.  I'm looking for a smooth rolling, arcing reaction.  Basically something to complement the PG Pearl, which is pretty snappy for me.

Lable drill it. It's a pancake block.

Only the Urethane PG is a pancake block.  The others are have the DISC core.

Two more questions:

What is the pin distance on the Sanded?

Are you going to leave it in box finish, or put polish on it?

If all you want is an archier version of your pearl power groove, just drill it the same. The surface will be enough to make it rollier. Doing anything to make it arc more will probably just kill any backend and make it roll at the arrows.

BC, the pin on the sanded is 3-4" and as for the cover, I'm not sure yet.  I was thining some polish couldn't hurt, or even just take the surface up and leave it dull.  PK17 is pretty good at surface changing so I may play around with it.

If it were me, I'd probably go with something like a leverage pin, or maybe a 4" to 4 1/2" pin-to-PAP layout with a flare increasing hole.  The Power Grooves have such high RGs that it would be difficult to get a stronger midlane reaction without trying to open up the flares.  While the Sanded is smoother than the pearl PGs, it'll still be really pushy in front because of the construction of the ball.

Too bad it's got such a big pin...a pin-below layout on that ball would probably work really well.

I was thinking the same thing BC, a short pin would have been nice but thats the ebay gamble.  Something like 4 1/2" with pin above the ring would probably work well.  I expect this ball to be pretty strong anyways as I use my PG Pearl as my THS ball so pin up should be ok.

Dan, let me know how you end up having it drilled, and how it works for you.  I have a NIB PG Sanded in the closet, and I'm still debating myself as to how I want to drill it.

Roger that BC, I'll talk with my driller about it tonight at league and I'll let you know after I throw it.

Ric, the TW on the ball is 3.5oz I believe, box is in the car.  The ball won't be drilled up until this Wednesday so I haven't had a shot to try it out.  Inverted, I feel that the Pearl PG is plenty strong on a THS, and with a 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 with pin up should give a reaction you are looking for.  I've said it once and I'll say it again, the PG Pearl is sneaky strong and I love it.  I can't wait to get my solid punched up.

Well I finally got this baby drilled up, and one word sums it up for me, smooth.  I have it drilled the same as my PG pearl http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr?i=wMTExNzA3MDZzNDEzZGZkMzF5NTQx and got to practice with it on a THS this afternoon.  This ball is very smooth rolling for me, with little flare.  I see this ball working well for me on late shift, spotty conditions because its so smooth.  I tried to get the ball to snap for me, and even playing out by 5 the ball still just rolled, never snapped.  Hooray for Ebay for letting me pick this ball up.

Looks like you left the ball in box finish...if so, how much more does it hook overall than your pearl PG?
