Question about an older Brunswick piece - Monster Frenzy
« on: February 02, 2012, 02:13:44 AM »
Friend of mine just loves this old piece, and has been asking what is similar in nature to the core, cover, and roll characteristics of the ball ? Any Brunswick pro shop guys or staffers, anyone can give me suggestions. He would love to get a newer model ball, preferably Brunswick, but any cores / covers in another line could be a possibility.

Thanks,
Dan

I don't believe that Brunswick makes anything with this mild a coverstock (the N'Control) currently.
I think the last ball to use it was the original Avalanche Pearl, the blue/silver one .

The current 2 weakest pearl resins are the Slingshot, which is weaker than the Frenzy and the  Karma Blue/Green Pearl which is stronger than the Frenzy. You could probably get closer to the Frenzy by altering the surface and drilling of the Karma (blue/green) Pearl.

My guess would be the Karma Pearl (blue/green) also.

Even the Blue/Silver Avalanche used an updated cover version from the N'Control series (which was also used on the Punisher  and Morich's Sahara). IMHO, the PK18 pearl on the Karma reads the lane earlier than anything in the N'Control family - this stuff had been designed to be used on light conditions, going very long and then react rather sharply.

Anyway, another suggestion I'd throw in are those Brunswick ball that would use the more recent EnMotion coverstock like the Twisted Fury Pearl or the Smash Zone, or the High Octane Stuff on the Radical Inferno. These covers "behave" IMHO much like the N'Control stuff.

If your friend keeps the Karma Pearl highly polished it should be close enough, and any differences between the Karma and the Frenzy will be good ones... .

Any of the older ball suggestions are just that - older and not available anymore. If you found one used it might have 500 games on it and you're replacing an old ball with an old ball.

The lane conditioners (oils) are evolving, and to have something that has the capacity to be a tad stronger is not a bad thing unless you bowl on the Sahara Desert.

Scream/R...  Oh wait that's not new...

Not sure if you can find one, but I found the Elite PBA cheetah ball to be similar in reaction...

Although I'd like him to stick with Big B, he might want to take a look at the MoRich Perpetual Motion.  Like the Frenzy, it also has a Quantum-like mushroom core.  It's designed for light to medium and my guess is the cover takes to adjustments well.

Haven't tried the ball myself, but I'd like to some day!

Sorry, Doug. A friend had one. It's for light oil if your ball speed is about 20 mph.
Otherwise it's much stronger than that, for medium oil at least. And it's much stronger than the Karma Pearl.

Here's the specs on the MoRich Perpetual Motion: A lot lower Rg and Higher Diff!! Go with Karma pearl!!!

Expands the spectrum of the ball reactions available from MORICH.

Designed for light to medium lane conditions; add surface for more oil.

Excels on most house patterns and on shorter, more competitive oil patterns.

Has a HUGE symmetrical core that gives it great versatility with different drilling techniques.

.054" total diff. for large flare, improving traction on the back half of the lane.

2.470" RG for more revs at the break point.

Train a child up in the way they should go and when they are old they will do some "Damn Good Bowling", be a "DV8" and not turn from it, besides bowling starts with a Big B!

I used to own a Monster Frenzy in a higher weight than I currently throw. The closest ball I currently own is not a new ball; however for me the Avalanche Slide givees a very similar reaction to the Monster Frenzy - long but strong. You may be able to find a low mileage one since a lot of bowlers parked their Slides wanting something that hooked off their hands - for me it has always been money:)
