Title: Question on Slay/r
Post by: agroves on February 15, 2005, 09:57:43 PM: What do you guys think of a pin above middle finger, roughly 6 from pap, with the cg stacked below the MIDDLE finger?

I was thinking about trying this, has anyone else?

I have pretty much decided that I am going to plug and re-drill my Slay'R like this, but would like to see if you get any different comments from the ones I got.

I think C. Barnes used this one time for drier conditions, I just thought I might give it a try.

I am pretty much in the same boat here. I saw a local player using that layout on one of the Sonic series balls from Rotogrip with great success and figured it may work for me as well, since the current layout on my Slay'R just wasn't cutting it.

Seeing, as the cover is WEAK!, I stacked mine with the pin just below and exactly between the finger holes, with the CG stacked immediately below it (pin-CG distance is 2 5/8") Mine goes long on dry to medium-heavy (much more direct line, of course), it never does flip, just sort of nicely turns the corner and is so usable, it's disgusting. I keep trying to use different balls, some slightly stronger, some weaker and I keep scoring worse; this is the ball for me currently. I can swing it or I can go VERY direct (had to recently and scored fairly decently - 695, on what for me has been very difficult lanes this year.)

Every resin I throw seems to aggressive for drier heads no matter how it is drilled. I am not comfortable playing 25 and further left, but sometimes I have to. I want something that isn't going to jump and every resin seems to do that for me.

Maybe its time for a slate blue gargoyle.

I just picked up an original Sonic-X pearl in my quest not to use my Slate Blue Gargoyle, as an alternative to the Slay/R. Not sure why I feel like I don't want to use the urethane; just mentally uncomfortable with it, although it can be very useful.) Maybe, if you have more hand and more ball speed than I do, you can get comfortable with it. Just put the pin above the bridge or ring finger; RG is too low and even pearlized urethane can be early.

Post by: DON DRAPER on February 16, 2005, 08:46:34 PM: rick benoit helped me with this ball before i bought it. he told me the coverstock really needs dry to get it to move so don't be afraid to drill it to your preference. for me, thats putting the pin next to and even with the bottom of the ring finger with the cg swung towards the center of the grip( just enough to avoid a balance hole). i keep the coverstock very smooth( wetsanded 4,000 grit abralon and brunswick polish ). i'm don't seeing a skid/flip type reaction but thats probably due to my low rev rate and weaker release.
