Radical Inferno review
« on: July 29, 2006, 10:59:52 PM »
Since they don't have something up for it yet . .

The shop had one when I went, so I decided to take it!  15-3, 3.75 top, 3 1/2 inch pin.  Ended up being 3 3/4ths by 4 1/2, with exactly 1 ounce sideweight and 0 thumb/finger weight.  Might use a weighthole, not sure yet though, gonna play with it a little.

First of all, cosmetically, this ball is the best looking ball I've ever seen, honestly.  Think a shiny X-Factor Reloaded with metallic yellow added, it's just gorgeous.

First couple tosses reminds me of a Smokin.  Clears the heads effortlessly, and gets through the mids rather well too.  Here's where the difference lies.  Naturally, it has the trademark hard arc of an Inferno line ball, when it picks up, it keeps rolling through the pocket, no skid/stop or hook/set type reaction.  It's supposed to go longer than the Smokin, and on occasion, it does.  The hook potential is slightly more than a Smokin (I have a box Smokin drilled very similarly, btw), but it acts differently at the breakpoint.  It's more sensitive, and although it only did it to me once, I can see it being squirty.  It's definitely more skid flippy . . but it doesn't flip.  When it sees dry, it starts moving, but not violently.  On a fresh medium oil pattern with decent strength backends, I can see you being in the pocket all day.  It'll give you a good read on track burn, and doesn't jump quite as hard as the Smokin does, however, it seems to like to move earlier.  Doesn't have the traction in oil that the Smokin does, but it reads very smoothly and strongly off dry.  I had several shots I threw where I wasn't sure it'd make it back in time, but it did.  It'd start moving and then continue to lazily make its way through the pocket.  Everything kind of arcs at this house though, so at my Laneshield house, I expect this ball to really come alive.  Definitely won't overreact.  It's not hook in a box, but if you can get a ball into a good roll, this one will be magic.  With a few adjustments, you could score from anywhere on the lane.  The only problem would be that I can't see it handling carrydown well at all.  But all in all, it looks great, rolls great, and although I can't see myself having many honor scores with it, I CAN see myself averaging very well.

Sounds like a ball that would compliment the smokin and/or vapor zone. Thanks for the review, looking forward to picking one up within the month.

Thats great.  Its a good feeling when you drill a ball and you like it off the bat.  Dont be afraid to adjust the surface on it.  This new Octane cover seems to take very well to surface changes and will give you some different looks on the lane.  Ive had mine all the way down to 500 no polish and it still gets down the lane with ease.

how does everyone have their ball drilled? I was thinking something like 5 1/2 or 5 3/4 from the pap. Pin above the fingers in the middle of them both. Now where the weight hole or x-hole goes i have no idea. I still dont get the full concept of it. Also when does it come out? I just bought a Red Zone b/c it was out and that ball seems to do what u just described the Radical of doin.

Matter of fact, I was kinda thinking about that, Jason . .  I might take a little of the polish off so it's not as sensitive.  I can always stand a little further left if it makes it hook earlier.  I'll probably try to tune into it first, because I like how it reacts, and I think once I play around and find more of the ball's strengths, I probably won't change anything.  Took me a little while to really unlock the potential of my Smokin too.  Got a good feeling about it already though . .

SrT, mine ended up at 3 3/4ths by 4 1/2.  It's very comfortable to throw too, I love that about Brunswick stuff, and especially the Inferno and BVP lines.  Very consistent and readable, all of them.

Ahh, and SrT, it's already out, I think.  Maybe my shop got an early seed ball and it's still not available to distributors yet, but I'm thinking it is.

Its out, just not everyone has them yet. 2 local shops near me have them already sold out of the 1st orders. Its gonna be at least 2 months before I can pick 1 up at a shop near me. Cant wait to get my hands on 1 for the fall season.

I agree, im getting the same thoughts. Thats why I decided that I will save my money and just get another vapor zone instead. Im gonna sell my The one in the for sale forums if i dont find a buyer on the 12th. So my arsenal would be Smokin, Vapor, big one, scorchin. that should cover most conditions i think.

quote:
Sounds like another winner from Brunswick, but I will be keeping my Smokin' I think. It seems like this ball tries to be the Vapor and the Smokin' at the same time, but it sounds like, for me, the Vapor is a better board coverage ball and the Smokin' is a better down-and-in ball. I guess if I only wanted to carry 4 balls though, that this could easily be #2, after a Scorchin' and ahead of a Punisher, Power Groove, or Dry/R.

I am still salivating over a solid sanded version of this ball, though!

I did notice how . . odd the ball looked at the pins.  Lol, it was great, cause they were all falling over, but it definitely does look different.  The continuation is great too.  I can see the number of stone 8's and 9's being a lot less with this ball.  I think it's going to be a standout for most versatile ball and best ball of the year.  I can't wait to get out and throw it some more.
