I think the High Gloss polish on the ball might have been a mistake. Many, in fact, most people will not touch the stock surface, no matter how many times you tell them to adjust it and that it's easy and the proper thing to do. The ball with the polish just never seemed to be what people thought it would be. Thus a lot of bad publicity seems to be following this ball.
On the other side of the coin, the vast majority of people seem to associate length with drier, light oil lanes. So if it goes long then it's not for any oil.
Once an image is established, that's the way people see the ball.
