Ultimate Inferno - Does not hook...
« on: January 09, 2005, 01:58:22 PM »
Well.. Drilled 3 new balls yesterday.  An Impulse Zone, Ultimate Inferno and Almighty.  Drilled the Ultimate a little stronger than the Raging Inferno that I have that is most hooking in my bag...

Pin is just right of ring finger. CG kicked a good bit.  Needless to say, the Ultimate Inferno does not move.  tried surfaces between 360 and 2000.. and still no luck.  Weight hole... nothin.  Seems like the first shot I throw with it hooks a touch, then theres a little oil on, it doesnt even try to hook.

Very disappointed in this ball.  Really thought it would work well.  Impulse looks decent (should be good on fresh house shot).

If you can you should post a vid of you throwing it and let several people look at the layout on the ball and your toss....

I had one that was drilled very close to label and it was very "rolly" for me.  This is great for tighter patterns, but it seems most people don't like it because it doesn't hook out of the building on the backend.  Many people have complained that they were dissapointed with the ball because of this and that is my only reason to believe this.  I would tell people to drill it for a skid/snap reaction if they want something to them that looks like it hooks a ton.

It almost sounds that by the way you described the layout, you may have put too much into the ball.  When a ball is dynamically that strong already and you try to put a strong layout in it, sometimes the ball will puke on you.  You are taking a ball that already has a large flare potential and you are adding more to it.  In order for a ball to have have any backend reaction, you must retain the balls energy for that reaction.  Since you took a ball already designed to roll very early and put a strong layout in it, it sounds like the ball has lost its energy by the time it leaves the heads, therefore having nothing for a backend reaction.  Not saying this is definitely the case here, but it has been known to happen.  I would say plug the ball and redrill it putting the pin next to or under the ring and leave the cg much closer to the center of the grip.  this should help maintain the energy needed for a backend reaction.

TWOHAND834, I am pretty sure you know more than me cause i see you work at a pro shop, but if the ultimate inferno is supposed to be for heavy oil isn't the idea on heavy oil to get the ball into an earlier roll and if so why would it lose it's energy if it's in heavy oil? I might be getting an ultimate inferno for heavy oil and i haven't decided what drill pattern to use yet.

The UI needs to be polished to a glass finish for your standard house shot.  Otherwise it will burn up if there is not enough head oil present. Balls with strong cores and aggressive coverstocks are designed to "hold" in oil, not hook a ton.

I have to agree with the previous post. I LOVE my UI, lotsa hook, but it was totally dead until I polished it, now it's my favorite....

I having same problem you are!  I am now on my second one and both of them will try first ball out then it like ok i hooked one i done.  I dont know what i doin wrong or if this isnt the ball for me love the impulse zone it is a great oil ball.  I am going to try polishing theUI let know if it works better that way.

Ike,

Believe me.  I will be the first to admit that there are some things I am still learning.  But if you read the post closely, I said that it may not me the case this time around but it can happen.  Even I am asking questions from time to time trying to get better understanding of things.  But my understanding from what I have learned is that whether heavy oil or not, if you put TOO aggressive a drilling in a ball already designed to be that aggressive, you can get a ball to burn up too quickly so that a ball rolls out or just flat out dies on the backend.  EXAMPLE:  There is a guy that bowls on my team on Monday nights.  There are at times, where his Intense hooks more than his Ultimate, yet the Ultimate is designed for more overall hook than the Intense.  Not saying that is the case for jap8746, but it can happen.
