Rampage
« on: April 04, 2010, 12:19:06 PM »
I have a rampage and I just can't seem to get a good reaction out of it. It snaps hard but I can't get it to carry unless I hit my mark dead on. I can't get any hold if I miss left. Right now I have it at 4000 plus brunswick high gloss polish. Any suggestions on what I could change it to to get a better reaction?

Sounds like you need to add some surface to smooth out the backend. Try hitting it with 2000. This will smooth it out and get rid of that quick flip off the spot.

If you can't get any hold when you miss left perhaps you're not playing the right part of the lane. Or, you could be bowling on a flatter oil pattern where shotmaking is at a premium. I would look at your own game first and then look at the ball reaction.

I don't think I'm playing the wrong part of the lane. When I throw my triple x-factor same line, maybe 1 or 2 boards difference, I have 3-5 boards left. I have tried every line I can to get the rampage to the pocket and nothing seems to work. I'll hit it with the 2000 tonight and try that out tomorrow and see what happens.

As for hold area left (inside):
Something's not quite right with whatever situation you're describing, if the X-Factor gives you hold and a 4000 grit + polish Rampage does not.

The only thing I can think of is that the X-Factor is totally oil-soaked and is not hooking anywhere near what it should.

Given the Rampage's stock surface is 400 grit (NOT 4000 grit) + polish, yours should need only light oil to clear the heads. It should hardly handle medium-light oil unless you have the "hand of God".

As for getting to the pocket:
Do you want less snap? Try P1500 or P2000 + a light coat of polish.
Its snap at the breakpoint should not affect carry on flush hits.

How different is the drill on the Rampage vs the X-Factor?
AND
Have you ever had the X-Factor revived? (oil extraction)
It is an older ball.

They both were givin a hot water bath about a month ago. The rampage is pin below ring finger. I am not sure about the triple x factor. It is a pretty strong drilling though. Pin is a little up and to the right of ring finger. Cg is straight below it. I agree with you that I should have more hold in the oil. One thing I forgot to mention is that I have a lot of revs and ball speed is not that high (which is something i'm working on) so I definately have a hook, which isn't necessarily a good thing.

As charlest mentioned the factory surface was much lower than what you are currently throwing it at. Try taking it to a lower grit under a polish and see what it does.

Finding the correct match-up these days on most patterns (especially THS) comes down to the right surface adjustments.

The Rampage has been my go-to ball on a variety of conditions for the last ~3 years.  I've never tried it at anything but 400 plus high gloss.  The ball is a perfect match to my game.

Sounds to me like it is jumping too much on the back.  Definitely try 400 plus polish....or even 220 plus polish.  This should tame the backend reaction down some, but still clear the heads well.

FWIW, this is the best ball I've ever drilled.  It is the only ball I have a NIB extra stashed away.

I might have to try the 400 plus polish. I am just afraid that will give me to strong of a reaction which is not what I am wanting at all. Due to the fact that I have a higher rev rate and lower ball speed, which I am working on.

I tried the ball at 2000 today. It did seem a lot smoother and more controllable. I am going tomorrow to bowl on synthetics instead of these wood lanes here and I will see how it does on them and then report back.
