Some Vids - Strike Zone and Others
« on: July 03, 2005, 05:24:01 PM »
Decided to do a comparison between the Strike Zone, Ultimate Inferno, and Warp Zone. Since my home center doesn't normally have a long enough pattern or a sufficient oil volume to throw oil balls, I took a short drive down to Earl Anthony's Dublin Bowl. Nice new Brunswick Pro-Anvilane's, and a decent volume of oil (although it was a house shot).

To keep the balls similar, I took the Ultimate’s finish to a 1000 grit wet-sand. Did the same thing to the Warp Zone. The Strike Zone was still in box finish (800 grit with a few games on it). Layouts? – See below:

Benchmark Ball:

The first video is with the shot fairly fresh. First ball is my “benchmark” PBA Inferno with the very tame layout. The next nine shots in the video are in the order they were thrown – although I must admit I did delete a few bad shots.

Here’s a short clip with a couple of Strike Zone tosses a little deeper on the lane. Pretty poor cinematography, but it’s better than nothing.

Overall, I'd have to say that on a fresh house shot with some oil, it doesn't get much better than an aggressively drilled Warp Zone (at least for those of us who don't crank it up). The Strike Zone isn't far behind. The Ultimate with its tame layout went too long to be a good choice for this pattern, but it has its place in my arsenal. The Absolute was fun, but it wouldn't have been my first choice on this pattern. If I missed inside it didn't have the bite that the Warp and Strike Zone had.

Example - the following clip shows three shots that were thrown real close to each other during the practice session, so the shot was the same for each ball. On all three (Absolute - Strike Zone - the Warp Zone) the ball crosses 17 at the arrows, out to around 8 at the break point. You can easily see the difference in ball characteristics.

Thanks for the videos. It provides a great comparison between these oilers and this type of comparision was really needed.

A LOT of my stuff is higher pin. That's probably because I did most of my bowling on a house shot that's on the shorter side. Another reason - most of my equipment was drilled up back when I wasn't throwing the ball as well. I needed the higher pin layouts for the extra length it provided. My ball speed is up a bit now and the timing is improving, so I'm having more success with the other layouts. I do have some with lower pin layouts that I carry regularly. The PBA Inferno and the Fuze Eliminator. Both of them see a lot of play.
The Ultimate Inferno with that pin over bridge layout has one use for me - I can jam it in the pocket when nothing else seems to be working. I only threw it on the video for comparision purposes. It is NOT a good layout for that type of condition. Had it been "for score", I would have thrown either the Warp or SZ, then gone to the Absolute when the heads broke down.
I enjoyed doing the video. If I can find the time, I'm going play with the surface on the Strike Zone and burn up a few more Megabytes.

Randy,
At Andy's instance, I just looked at it today and I want to tell you it was great and was the best, clearest, largest, etc. etc. I have seen on this site. I wish others would do the same.

Thanks. One of the reasons you don't see a lot of these is that it's a LOT of work. A couple of hours at the bowling center. Download camcorder to computer. Edit. Titling. Upload. You're talking 4 to 5 hours of work for somthing like this. All this time "should have" been spent working around the house. I only got away with it because my wife was at work all day.
Obviously she doesn't view this site.

Added a 3 shot clip to the bottom of the original post showing 3 different balls all hitting 17 to 8.

Shot was OK. It was nice to see enough oil to allow me to throw that part of my arsenal. I could have made any of the balls work good. The Warp Zone gave me the most area on the fresh shot. The Strike Zone would also have been very playable. The Absolute was weak on the heavier oil on shots that missed inside. Even the Ultimate was effective with its weak layout - I just had to tighten up the line. Typical house shot.
