You CAN tell if a Brunswick ball has particle to the coverstock by visual inspection - it looks like very fine mica, or PET sparkles, and they become more obvious when you submerge the ball in water (different light - the particles become more translucnet and appear darker).
I had recently the case that I have seen the Elite balls for the first time, looked at the Viper - and it is in fact a particle ball, you can clearly see it when you take a close look.
The problem with the Sidewinder is that it has a low particle load, and that the pearl resin makes contrast to the particle additives really low, so you best bet is to have a look at the solid black areas. But even then it is tough to tell.
