Comparing Purple Rhino Pro to Lane 1 Chainsaw
« on: December 30, 2008, 09:48:10 AM »
I was looking into purchasing a Lane 1 Chainsaw, and was enticed by the video on Buddies website.  However, when I saw the price I was a little turned off so I went searching for something cheaper.  Not bashing at all, I just thought a ball made for lighter oil situations would be closer to $100 than $200.

I turned to the Purple Rhino Pro remake.

The site says it has a low RG and .015 differential with a 2 piece core.

The Chainsaw was .013 with a modified 2 piece.

Just looking at the covers they look to be close to the same.

Would these be pretty close in performance?  I have been in the market for something that reacts close to Urethane with a little more hitting power.

I was able to pick up the Rhino for less than $50 shipped, so I hope this will work for me.

Also is there a drilling that could help get the desired reaction I am looking for?  This ball has about a 4" pin and 2.5 oz of tw.  I am a lefty with average revs and ball speed.  Maybe a drilling that would place the pin over my middle finger would smooth it out?

Any help appreciated

Hey guys just wanted to update this post.

I decided to go with my gut and punch up my bLunswick Purple Rhino Pro to see what it could do and hoped it would give me what I was looking for.  Sadly, I purchased some of the new KR Brunswick black tape and it's horrible, so I had to wait to find some Ebonite tape.  The difference 5 pieces rather than 9.

Anyways, I drilled it with the pin above and to the left of my ring finger, with the cg stacked below just below the grip midline.

Drilling looks like that.  Anyways, I haven't thrown the Lane 1 Chainsaw, so I can't compare the two,  but the PRP Remake is exactly what I wanted.  A ball I can move left with and play up the boards on high friction surfaces.

While I do feel I have a small gap between my Hy-Road and PRP, for THS league shots, I feel this is a very solid 1-2 combo.

I threw 4 games with it during open bowling just to see what it could do.  We got on the lanes right after the Friday night league ended, so there was some oil out there.  Long and smooth.  Not a super hard turn on the back, but a nice smooth arc shape, and that's all I could ask for.  It gives me the reaction shape of a Urethane with the hitting power of reactive.  This was a good guess when looking to  add a ball like this to my bag.

Like I said earlier, I never did throw the Chainsaw, but if you were looking for a ball that would work on high friction area, or when the lanes dry out, the Purple Rhino Pro Remake is not a bad choice.
