is there anything comparable to...
« on: November 11, 2004, 06:44:58 AM »
the Sapphire Zone in today's Big B lineup.  I'm looking for a new ball for my dad for christmas and he loved the Sapphire before he gave it to me.  He is a power tweener, above average revs w/speed near 17mph.  Right now he is throwing a Track Freakout,El Nino Wrath, and his go to ball is a Trauma Recovery.
He has mentioned wanting to try Brunswick again so why not give it a shot.  Any input you guys have would be great.  Also, how does the Zone Classic compare to the Sapphire? I hear so much good stuff about that ball, it makes me curious.

Stat wise they are similar, but the covers are different.  PK 17 on the sapphire, and PK 18 on the classic.

Was his the pearl or the solid?

The sapphire is the solid one, not the pearl.

I thought the Classic has an Activator cover, like the Inferno?

Yes, the classic zone has activator.

Oh whoops I forgot it was activator, sorry.  Just not used to activator being non-inferno.  Well there you go, an even bigger difference then.

Activator pearl will react differently than solid pk 17.  But I think he should try it, a LOT of people who have this ball love it.

One other ball that's been surprising quite a few people lately is the Goliath. If you take the surface of this ball to 1500 or 2000, then polish it, you'll find this ball to be very smooth and predictable. With the 17 mph ball speed he should have no trouble getting the ball through the front and it will read the midlane true like Saphires did. If the "particle" of the Goliath makes you nervous, I would also lean towards the Zone Classic as others have mentioned.

I've thrown the Nemesis in box condition.  Yeah, it's strong, but it doesn't burn as much in front as you might expect.  However, even in box condition, the Nemesis is still more angular than any Bruiser that I've thrown.  Two really different reactions there...at least for me.

I've also thrown the Goliath in box condition, and have been *very* surprised.  The first time I threw the Goliath, I expected it to hook at the foul line.  Instead, I got a nice float through the front, and a smooth, almost urethane-like reaction in the midlane and in back.  I liked the reaction so much that I left it in box condition, and now I use it to tame down wet-dry conditions (which I see almost every week in league).

However, what I remember most about the Sapphire is its smooth transition in the midlane.  IME the current Brunswick ball that has a shape that is closest to that of the Sapphire Zone is the original Inferno.  For me, the ZC is a bit pushier in front, but a lot sharper at the break.
