ball choice help
« on: February 01, 2006, 04:32:55 AM »
I'm kind of new at this so please bear with me.  Trying to find a ball best suited for what I call medium dry to dry lane conditions.  I am currently using a Punisher drilled 4L with a 2 1/2 inch pin out.  Some people have told me that I should have gotten a minimum of 3in pin out, this another subject for another day, unless someone has an answer for me.  I am pondering a Rampage or even a Smokin Inferno to add to my arsenal drilled the same way as my Punisher is now(4L). Would this be advisable?  I'm looking for alot of lenght and a sharp break to the pocket.  Any advice or help would be appreciated

punisher is length and arc.... smoking can be drilled length and snap easily... but the Smoking is kinda for the same lane condition.

Here are the next 3 best choices....

Paradigm - Storm
Backyard Bully - columbia
Hawg Wild - hammer

The Punisher is IMHO the best choice for the job you want to get done. The SI is similar in reaction, but overall stronger, and I do not think that it would be a good choice. It would ba a ball to use before you could use the Punisher on the same lane. 4L is already very weak for dry lanes.

Rampage would read the lane too early. An option could be a Power Groove, either a pearl reactive one, or a Dry/R. The pearl PGs can be drilled to be very snappy, a friend of mine has one with a 4E drilling and it is astonishing what a back end and late hook (despite the rather rolly configuration) this thing creates on toasted turf! The Dry/R is even weaker and moves overall less than a normal PG - but it works pretty well.

Another option could be - if you still can find one - a Zone Classic Red Pin. They are on sale online, very cheap, and these balls make great dry lane balls because the coverstock is very weak. Do not expect it to flip dramatically, but wehn you need length, this is another ticket to success.

Does the Punisher hook too much?

The Punisher doesn't hook too much for me. It seems to me that if I were to go to a different ball I may not make it down the lane. I'm just wondering if I had more of a pin out would it go a little farther than what I have now?  I have a 2 1/2"  pin out now with my current Punisher.  What would be the difference if say I had a 4" or 5" pinout?  Thought if I could swing a Rampage or a Smokin Inferno I may hit the pocket a little harder, I seem to be leaving some solid ten pins with my Punisher.

Would the Smokin be alright say if I had a 5" pin out, drilled 4L?  Would it still skid/snap or lose alittle on the back ends?

Let me try to explain my game little better.  I am a cranker with med ball speed, and a ton of revs. The league I bowl on has what I would call med oil to dry lanes.  Just trying to find a ball that will work for me.  May be I should be looking for a differnt drill pattern than what I have now?.  I just figured that with me reving the ball so much that I should go with label drill 4L.  Any suggestions would be great!!

Littledeke- get a ball with a less aggressive cover stock if brunswick use 1L or 2L patterns this should help with your revs/low ball speed.you most likely will not benefit from premium equipment. use pearl cover stocks for length/solid for mid lane and control. Hope this helps. PIn OUT does not really make a difference except for that it gives the driller more options

Thanks for the info mad dawg.  One question I do have is if I drill it 1L or 2L is that to much hook for me?  My Punisher is drilled 4L and iget a ton of hook out of it now.
