Ok, thoughts on my Red Zone
« on: August 24, 2006, 11:03:17 AM »
I've only thrown it for 3 games on a normal league shot, mind you, so I'll wait to post an official review until I gather more data.  From those of you that read my Radical review, the league was at the house with Anvilane.  Medium oil to 23 feet, then buffed to 37.  Typical house pattern, fair amount of miss room with a strong wall from 6 out.  The ball was layed out by Jesse James of In the Zone Pro Shop in the KC/Lawrence/Topeka area, and was drilled by Brian Zachary, also of In the Zone Pro Shop (manager of the Topeka location).  I didn't get the exact measurements, but it looks like 4 1/2 x 4 1/2.  I'll measure it later to make sure.  Cg is in line with the pin and psa.  Also had to add an extra hole about two inches diagonally down and right from my axis.

Jesse nailed the layout, and Brian nailed the drill (thanks guys!) so it's incredibly comfortable to throw all the way around.  My Radical has been giving me a few fits because it takes a little too long to rev up and can get squirty, and I needed something that hooked more and continued well on the backends.  This ball actually performs better than I expected or could have hoped for.  It's accurate to say it's a solid ZC, because the reaction shape is similar.  It doesn't really hook earlier and is just as strong on the backends, but it IS more consistent.  When the ZC might tend to go a little too long or pull up late, the RZ maintains a consistent and STRONG backend.  Retains energy exceptionally well, I hit the pocket too hard a handful of times (3 solid 7's and a few 9's).  Glides through the heads, very easy length to 30 feet where it starts revving and absolutely turns over when it hits the backends.  Pulled up well enough that I only left two 10 pins all night, and they weren't flat leaves.  This house is typically slow as far as lane changes go, but the 3rd game can get a little fun with 5 man teams.  Moved two boards left all night.  Pulled my breakpoint in a little to miss the burn, and it still reacted incredibly.  If track burn ever forces me much further inside, this is a ball you could get deep with and not lose any energy or hit from the angle and that would still get through the heads without a problem.  The true test will be the Laneshield house (which is surprisingly tough this year) on Tuesday, so I'll post a full review then.

Lmao, with respect to Rick Benoit, I know there are quite a few technical differences between this ball and the Raging Red Fuze, but considering my 3 RR's were drilled weaker and for a more angular breakpoint, and also considering this shot is easy enough to blend reactions, the RZ reminds me a lot of the RR.  Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside . .

It should be!  It feels like a standout so far.

Also my impression: very close to the RR Fuze. I only saw one in action so far, but it has the same early reaction and killer roll to it. Looked nice, and a consolation that this initial impression seems to be correct?

I'm confused.  I thought that the Red Zone is just a polished Strike Zone, basically.  Is there really anything different in it?  Why weren't people trumpeting polished Strike Zones if THIS ball is so good?  Not trying to knock anyone or anything, I'm just confused.    Am I just wrong about the Strike Zone thing?
