The South Region is holding a tourney my home center august 25th-26th. We were scheduled to bowl on pattern#2, but now has been changed to pattern#4, the most difficult of the 5. I have bowled on the US open pattern b4, but never this regional pattern. It will be my first regional, any suggestions for attack, have a feeling the scores are going to be very low. Center is wood with a pretty worn in track area...

I bowled on this a few weeks ago. Brunswick Proanvilane lanes I believe. The "stripe" from 30-42' makes the ball tend to squirt a bit. I had good success with some surface on a smooth reacting ball (MoRich WMB). The insides played kind of dry from the beginning for some reason. I stayed around the track area with a small swing and shot -1 for qualifying. Match play didn't work out very well. I didn't have a good reaction inside, and the outsides got even more squirty. Most players kept moving inside, but my slower ball speed didn't allow the ball to get enough length before reading the pattern. If you're on wood with a worn track, I'd look for something smooth (1000-2000 grit) with no polish to start with. Stay as close to the track area as you can and don't loop the ball much. Tight lines were much more reliable.

Checking your profile you probably have the ball speed to be able to migrate to deep inside as the qualifying round progresses. Starting out though you will want to keep your angles simple and play as direct as possible. Spares will be at a premium as well. Don't be afraid to make moves as every pair will most likely play different than the last.

If they use a low/light volume, it may break down to banking the track area, or firing at the track area. Pattern 4 usually plays better straighter, at least for me. Don't give the pocket away trying to hit the home run. Shoot for 210 every game, and you will cash!
