How do you bring the Versa max back to box condition and can you substitute an Abralon pad for a Siaair pad?
-
The best results would be to use a spinner to restore the factory surface on the versa-max. The first step is to take the surface to 500 grit using a abralon or siaair pad on 4 or 6 sides. Then, use rough buff on at least 2 sides, and finish with high gloss polish on at least 2 sides.
-
dumb question alert... What is "rough buff"
-
Rough Buff is Brunswick's polishing compound. It has abrasives, which is why it's used after the 500 grit pad. Personally, I find it extremely close to the Storm #2 and use them both interchangeably (in case you have one but not the other).
-
Thanks! That would explain why I got such poor ball reaction. Just ordered some rough buff.

The instructions given above are accurate. They are on the VersaMax web page.
Yes, Abralon and Siaair use the same grading system, FEPA. So 500 grit created by an Abralon pad will be the same as 500 grit created by a Siaair pad.
To be a little bit more explicit -
I feel it is more accurate to describe Brunswick's Rough Buff as a rubbing compound due to its aggressive abrasive action. It used to be used over 220 grit on many Brunswick balls, like the Vapor Zone. Today, the stock finishing process usually calls for it to be used over 500 grit, sometimes 1500 grit. RB will add a polish-like shine when used over a higher grit, like 2000 grit. (In this sense, it will act like Storm's Step 2 - being also very abrasive, it can polish a ball when applied intensely.) When RB is applied over the 500 grit sanding, the finish appears half-dull, half-shined. While it could be considered equivalent to about a 3000 - 4000 grit sanding, it is not that and does act differently from a simple sanding.
Brunswick polishing compound is called Factory Finish High Gloss polish. This is what is applied after the Rough Buff has been applied to the VM.

Thanks, charlest, for clarifying. Rough Buff is definitely a compound that is pretty aggressive. If you've ever left sanding lines by using a lower grit abrasive the Rough Buff and the like will help remove them.

Had a friend using his Versa Max box(shiny) he had an 800.
Had a friend use a Versa Max box in some big senior PBAs very high finish.
Heard a guy named Walter Ray something used a dull versa Max in some Senior PBA events, annhilation!

My only add on would be, I prefer a Haus or equivalent resurfacing device to do the Saiair pads. It does a more uniform job and sanding rather than doing it by hand.

If you own your own pro shop, yes a Haus machine is the professional way.
If you own your own spinner, then doing it on a Haus machine makes no sense.
Siaair and Abralon pads can do a perfectly good and proper job.

I've always wondered how long do you apply the Rough Buff on each side of the ball for on your spinner?

Til you're happy with the result. (no smiley face).
For me, over the 500 grit sanding, I applied RB just slightly longer than I would with a 2 sided, medium-gloss polish. Maybe 45 seconds to a minute for each side with medium-firm pressure. In reality, it does depend on what you want from the ball. There is no magic formula, because of the number of variables & the human factor.

Having recently bought a Versa-Max, I thank all here in this topic of whom contributed information to bring this ball back to box finish. This will aid me in redoing my ball once it has had enough use to require doing so. Unfortunately tho, due to severe health problems, my ball hasn't seen much use since I bought it and none for the past 3+ weeks and probably won't see much if any before the end of year. :'(

Brickguy221.
First things first. Get feeling better. Your ball will be ready for you when you return.

Brickguy!
Get better first, then get Versa!

Yes, get better Brick.
Charlest: you pretty much confirmed what I thought, which is the finish when using compound is totally dependent on the pressure and length of application. Thanks.

Guys, first I want to appoligize for hi-jacking this tread, but since I said what I said previously, I will go ahead and tell the whole story. I hope all will forgive me here as this wasn't the place to bring this up.
I have rectal cancer, a 4" tumor. Been going thru several tests the last 2-3 weeks, 3 cat scans, colonoscopy, endoscopy ultra sound, x-rays, meeting first with family Dr., then twice with oncologist, twice with surgeon, twice with radioligist, blood tests, minor surgery to install a power port in my chest, and so on. Now they also want to do a pet scan on me this coming Tuesday and on Monday (the day before) I have to go back to radioligist again to get body molds made so they can do the radiation as well as another cat scan.
Beginning July 23, I have to wear a pump on my waist that will feed chemo thru the power port 24 hrs a day 5 days a week for 6 weeks. I also have to have radiation daily 5 days a week for 6 weeks to shrink tumor so that they can do surgery which will take 4 hours. Then there will be a 4-5 week waiting period for healing and then they will do the surgery to remove the tumor from rectum. Then another 4-5 week waiting period for healing and then I will have to wear the chemo pump again for another 4-6 MONTHS.
Soooo, it is going to be quite a while before I am back to bowling again.

Take care of your health. Stay positive. You will likely have some tough, tough days ahead, but your friends and family will bear you up. I hope you will continue to post here just so we know you're okay.
Bowling is what we do for recreation, but it's not who we are. We are part of a part of something much, much larger. We care.
If we don't hear from you often enough we will be forced into sending some extremely hot nurses to check on you. And if that doesn't work we will be forced into sending some "not extremely hot" nurses to your house... ;D
-
Brickguy, good luck with your treatment.
-
Good luck with the Chemo and the surgery, Jim.
Bowling and balls will always be here waiting for your return.
