What's it worth?
« on: February 03, 2016, 10:17:29 AM »
I have a friend with a NIB Quantum Helix (black/gold) that he's thinking about selling. He's wondering what it's worth

I've seen them listed for $1000, but never seen one sell. I suspect it would bring $300-$400...if it's #15. Less for other weights.

What weight? Probably be a big difference. If you come back and say 16#...limited audience. 15# would probably be the best.

Also, Left handed or Right handed? Once again, big difference there as well.

Finally, what are the specs?

If he has a RH 15# with decent specs I could see big money in the ball...get something like a 4-5 LH 16# and he might be in trouble.

OP said NIB. So its just a question of weight.

For some reason, I feel the person who would pay big money for a ball like this shouldn't care what the specs are.  After all, at this point this ball is just for show.  Drilling it would effectively make it worthless for just about everyone except for the owner who drilled it.

The best I could imagine is a pro shop owner would buy this as a discussion piece on display in his shop.

If I could find a 14# LH model, I would drill it up. Especially the Double. The original I might pass on...but if the price was right I would be interested.

I remember having 2 or 3 of these things in my closet and couldn't give them away!  I ended up drilling one for myself...threw it for a few months and then someone decided they couldn't go one without out it.  I thin I sold it for $50...  Was buying them on eBay at the time for $30 to $40 shipped.

I remember those days....LONG GONE!

One house in my area was so dry in the heads because the house did not have an oiling machine....owner "oiled" by hand. Association tournament was at this place one year. Pulled out the Double, shot 741 scratch in singles with it and WON (late 90s). Didn't get to 2200 for AE but won that as well. Point being, on the right condition, the ball was deadly. If you tried to use resin, immediate trouble. You had to use urethane to get through the heads and the Double was perfect.

I picked the ball up from him on Friday. It's 15# even with 2.6 top. He does not have the original box so i scaled it to confirm the specs

What was the intent of the Helix?
Which part is urethane?

A stripe around the ball was pearl urethane.  The first few revolutions were supposed to be on the stripe.  Then the ball was to flare off the urethane and on to the "highly reactive" resin.  This would give the ball east length and strong backend....in theory.

About 3 years ago I was cleaning out some older stuff.  Had one of these, 16 LB's and the thumb had been slugged and moved and was not in very good shape.  I still got over $150 on eBay for it.  So, the demand is there for sure.  I still have a NIB original Red Hammer at home, but that's not for sale.  :-)
