Title: Ringer - First Impression
Post by: applegam on February 11, 2013, 08:38:08 PM
Only 3 games in league so far, but very impressed with this piece.  This ball has easy length, you can tell it want’s to push down the lane.  At this price point, that’s fairly common.  However, the break point is controllable, but very defined and angular.  That’s something you don’t typically see at this price point.  Usually balls in this category will push down the lane for you, but really labor at the break point.  This cover/core combo really, really works.  I can’t wait to put some more games on this on some other conditions.

I need to call my shop and see if mine came in.  Looking forward to something that's real clean through the front part of the lane, yet still does something in the back.  Since I've been bowling predominantly on sport shots, I'm much more up the back than I used to be (actually feels strange when I try to come around it) and I've never had much tilt, so easy length is exactly what I need.

This is the next ball on my list.

I drilled my Ringer a little stronger thinking that it would be a weaker ball based on the specs listed on the website, but I was shocked how much backend this ball has when reaching the friction. I expected it to be smoother reacting, but mine really goes left and continues off the spot. It does clear the front part of the lane with ease and doesn't get affected by carrydown.

I decided to use mine all 3 games last night. On fresh I played straight up 8 with great length and a nice turn with great carry percentage. As the lanes started to transition it still allowed me to play straighter lines with a PERFECT read once it found friction.  No "jump" or inconsistent read.  A VERY pleasant surprise!

Up til now I've always waited til there was more dry before using the Ringer, and it has yet to disappoint, but now I know I can use it on the fresh. The finish is strong, but nothing unexpected.  HUGE value with this one.

Can't help but to agree here. Ringer is different than other ball in this price point. IMO far exceeds the Karma's. The Ringer really shines on the burnt up patterns. Has save me numerous times already.

Rash was making his Ringer hook on the telecast!  The color and old school look of the ball already had me, but the ball motion and these reports make it even better.

Clearly, I'm not in the same class as Rash.  But, I really loved the look this gave me.  If I want to use the same ball all night, typically I end up moving about 2 arrows from where I start to the end of the 3rd game.   My first time out with the Ringer, I made a 2 & 1 left at the start of the 3rd game and that was it.  And just to throw in a little FIGJAM, 2 opens and still got to 797 out of the box  :D  It's the carry this ball provides that will set it apart.

Great match Apple. Keep it going.

I finally got mine drilled up Wednesday after a few mishaps.  I knew I was going to throw it Thursday, so I didn't get much comparison time with my other equipment.  Although it got down lane easily, I was expecting more length.  My Wicked Siege at 2000 abralon seemed to get more length in the few shots I made with it.  It has plenty of games on it, but I keep the surface fresh and de-oil it when necessary.  I might have to sand to a finer grit (1000 or 1500) and re-polish, but I want to throw it more before deciding.  Anyway, the Ringer responds to friction much harder than the Wicked Siege.  The Ringer has a sharper back end than just about everything I've thrown over the past 5 years (admittedly not a ton of equipment and probably nothing designed to be flippy).  It almost reminds me of my Silver Streak Pearl when it was new.  As long as you throw it good, and there's some friction, it will come back from just about anywhere.  Even with some pretty steep entry angles, somehow it never left a 9 pin.

I'll get some practice with it on Sunday on Shark.  Probably not me best choice on the fresh, but after a few games, 12-20 at the arrows dry out fast and I need something that will get down lane, but still have some angle at the break point.  I actually bought this ball for Shark and Scorpion since they seem to have a lot less volume in the middle part of the lane compared to a few years ago.

Side question - Does anyone else have problems picking up belt marks on a ball finished with Brunswick's High Gloss Polish?  My ball had a ton of marks on it by the end of the night and I didn't see other balls pick them up.  A dry towel wouldn't get them off, but they cleaned off easily at home with a cleaner.

The center where I bowl is notorious for leaving cushion marks, the kind that are really hard to get off with ordinary cleaners.  No one brand or type of polish is immune, but I've noticed that the Storm polishes seems to pick up more cushion marks than the High Gloss.  The Ebonite polishes seem to pick up fewer.

My Ringer comes on Friday. Gonna go 50*4.5*30 per Brunswick's advice. . I can't wait!

How would this ball perform on the dry? Overreact to friction?

Hard to say depending on your definition of dry.  I threw it a few shots the night I had it drilled.  They apparently hadn't oiled for a day or two, and even playing 5th arrow with more speed (neither of which is a strength of mine), I couldn't keep it right of the head pin.  I will say that it responds fast and pretty hard to friction; it's definitely not lazy down lane.  I'm 16.5-17 mph off my hand and a little over 300 rpm's and it's border line flippy in my hands.  If you have more revs or less speed, or have lots of axis rotation, it would probably over react to friction.

I have not seen anything indicating that the Ringer is a dry lanes ball. BTM's and BJI's review indicated a medium-light to medium oil ball. Medium-light for those with faster ball speeds or less revs, medium oil for those with matched speeds/revs or lower ball speeds.

It is just plain inexpensive and bargain at its price range, like  the Freeze and the Cyclone, neither of which are dry lanes balls. The Slingshot is Brunswick's dry lanes, rather light oil ball. As near as I can tell, the Ringer is in the class with the Meanstreak, handling ever so slightly less oil. at a much lower price.

Lower price rarely means a cheap ball or a dry lanes ball.
