Title: Sapphire Zone vs. Power Groove
Post by: PowrKoil17 on January 31, 2010, 10:33:12 AM
both of these balls have the same coverstock, but different cores. if you put the same drilling on them how similar will the reaction and carry be?

These days, probably little, but the Sapphire's core would be lower RG and probably similar diff so it would just rev up earlier and, in theory, hook a bit earlier and more.

I have a few people in my area that still have an original Sapphire zone and it hooks more then the power groove hands down. I believe the Avalanche solid with PK18 rolls/hooks much closer to the original Sapphire Zone then the Power Groove series.

i actually have the sapphire zone pearl and solid, plus i have a power groove red/teal pearl. my zone pearl has been resurfaced a few times and i have wondered about replacing it with another power groove with a similar drilling.

There is a huge difference in the RG and a minor difference in the amount of flare in the Sapphire vs the Power Groove. If you wnated to get them closer, I'd suggest a much lower pin position on the PG than you have in the SZ plus a strong weoght hole to increase flare plus possibly a rougher surface underneath the polish. You driller should know how to do all this easily.

There is a strong possibility that the older Sapphire has absorbed oil over the years and this has lead to some loss of hooking power and hitting power. So there may be less power difference overall between the older SZ and a new Power Groove Pearl.

my current SZ Pearl is drilled with the pin just right and even with the ring finger and the cg is swung to the left in line with the finger and thumb. i really like this layout. SZ solid is drilled similar with the pin to the right and just below the ring finger. so to get a power groove to be similar move the pin lower in the direction of the grip center?

Lower towards the midline, the line perpendicular to the line between thumb hole and center of the bridge.
