The equipment I'm currently using for league tends to read early and transition smoothly.
I wanted something a bit more angular that I could open up the lanes with once the track area has been blown open and there's a good area to throw at.
After watching some videos I'm pretty sure the Radical would be the go to ball for this.
Only thing that concerns that me is that people have mixed feelings on this ball. I keep reading that this ball is inconsistent in its reaction, has bad carry, etc.
So yah...I justed wanted some thoughts as to whether or not this is a good ball for the job.
-
I thought the ball was great, lower pin layouts were better to smooth out the reaction. http://brunsnick.com/total_inferno_vs_radical_inferno.html
I might consider drilling another with the Sarge grip, I thought the ball was money.

What about a Fury Pearl? Or Rampage? Or wait for the Swarm. Those might be easier to get than the RI.

FWIW, that's what I use *my* Radical for.
One caveat, though: The Radical *hates* oil down lane. But if you can hook around the push, you should be fine.

Angular? Swarm.
The Radical was also pretty angular, but I like my Swarm better.

I bought a Radical. I loved the Inferno line, so I figured I had to get this one as well...for me, sadly, it went long....very long....and just kept going.
I've seen a couple people use it with success, but they were mostly guys with spinner type releases.

go for the Swarm. You get the pearlized Powerkoil 18

First one I had, hated it. Rolled out on the dry, skated in oil.
Had Nick punch me up one with a 4 1/2 ptp pin dwn. Ball is a monster on medium to medium dry..

Bracket Creep brings up an interesting point regarding carry down. I know on the Fall league that I bowl on, they flood the lanes because of a 2nd shift league that comes in after. The oil tends to get pushed down and the backends get spotty. This concerns me a little bit.
As far as recommendations for something with PK18...that cover hasn't worked well. I've owned the rampage and have the avalanche solid...and I didn't match up well with it, thus am hesitant to get the swarm.
Though I've loved every inferno I've owned, plus my proshop has a new one sitting on the shelves...so I think I just may have to get it.

Thought the Radical was one of the worst balls Brunswick's put out in years.

Compared to most of the rest of the Infernos, it seems to have been more hit-and-miss for most bowlers. Some loved it, some hated it. The ones I saw were, as Bracket Creep said, very very sensitive to oil downlane.

Mine was the most condition specific ball I ever owned. At the slightest amount oil downlane the ball freakin hydroplaned and backed up yet it died the second it hit any friction, I never saw anything like it.

One more thing I wanted to add. I've found that the Radical works best on wood or older synthetic lane surfaces. If I take it to a center with a clean surface, it starts to get really skittish at the break.

What about the Twisted Fury? That ball works well for me under those conditions.I don't know about you other guys on here. I know some people really love the ball or really don't like it.
-
Well, I already have the Twisted...and it rolls pretty early and smoothly. I wanted something with a little bigger turn and a little more push down lane.
I didn't end up getting it tonight...some of the later remarks have me worried a bit. I do bowl on older synthetics...but with so much oil against so much dry...carry down does become a problem, and there is an out of bounds as well if I get the ball too far out.
So I am hoping this ball may be enough to get it back if I need to swing it. Most of the stuff I have checks up a bit too early for me.
But the whole issue with oil in the backends worries me a bit. In retrospect, most equipment nowadays will always have some issue with that.
I guess I will mull it over a bit more.

it was a nice hitting ball but could be kinda picky on what lane condition it was going to perform on.

No offense to the brunswick guru's but I absolutely hated this ball. OOb finish it went miles and duller finishes didn't seem to help. Imo i would try a Vapor Zone, angular and very versatile.

AFAIK, the RI was very touchy with its OOB finish, and the coverstock was weaker than advertised. Couple this flippy stuff with a rev-happy low RG core, and you get a ball that is very nervous and rather a hit-or-miss. Any player who used one I know either loved or hated it.
It would handle less oil than advertised - with a glossy surface, it was a very good ball for medium to medium-dry lanes and also for later games on broken-up lanes. Not a carrydown ball, but its low RG would help it roll easily on spotty back end areas.
Good thing is that with some surface tuning (normally getting rid of the OOB shine) made the ball more useable and easier to control. 4.000 Abralon made a compleetly different ball out of it for a friend of mine who was also very confused and disappointed with it.
Finally, from my pro shop who also had some troubles with the firt drilled specimens, I got the tip to drill it with a stronger pin position than one normally would. The ball needs some earlier roll to work - drill it for length, and it easily slips through its breakpoint.
Touchy ball. Can be "resurrected", but I would not consider it a "must have" ball, due to its nature by design. No wonder it quickly disappeared again.

I liked it. OOB on THS it's great (for me anyway)! For PBA exp patterns I went with 4000g. Here's a vid on THS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXo_t9Q1GyU

Hmm...you all have made it a tough choice. I think I may try to polish my total inferno first (maybe add a flare increasing x-hole)
I've talked it over with a few other people at my house who have used the ball. Most don't like it, and the only one that still uses it only does so because he doesn't want to buy new equipment.
I guess I will if that method yields what I want in terms of ball motion.

The Radical I had, I got from one of my customers. He was left handed. He HAD TO HAVE THE BALL RIGHT THEN!! Only problem was I only had one and it was about a 1/2 inch pin. He tracks high. I put the pin right up under his ring finger. Ball rolled great. Hit great. He was freaked out about the 1/2 inch pin. After 3 games in league he just kept whining. Took the ball back, gave him his money back. This was on a Saturday night.
Put grips in it for me, and re-slugged the thumb to fit me, actually think it was a Switch Grip. Three days later, I shot 779 with that ball in the scratch league bowled on a Sport Shot. Not a PBA shot, flat Sport shot. Ended up being the high series for the season in that league by almost 50 pins. Nobody averaged over 200, I was 198. It was too long to use many other times in this league, but it was awesome that night. It remained the first ball out of my back everywhere for about the next 6-8 months. The Radical is money. Think I'm going to start scouring Ebay to get 1-2 more!!

For me the Radical is a great ball on specific conditions. I have tried different cover preps, but have decided to keep it OOB for the most part. When my Fury Pearl is jumping too much on the backend I replace it with my Radical. These balls complement one another well. The ball is not good on oily lanes, but it shines on broken down patterns. I hated this ball at first, but kept working with it and found a gem.

If you're intent on getting a Radical....first off, consider the name! That should kinda give you an indication of what you're getting into.
Personally, I hated the ball. Lots of over/under and seemingly condition specific. Maybe I shoulda hung in there and done more surface changes, but oob, I hated it.
Good luck with yours.
