« on: February 27, 2005, 09:54:53 AM »
hello again all...  i finally got these pics of my UI so you can give me some drilling advice..  This is the first ball ive ever drilled myself, so take it easy on me!!!  I tried to follow the brunswick chart that came with the ball...  it doesnt quite have the finishing "snap" i want...    doesnt seem as aggressive as some of the other styles i see on here.. any tips or info would be appreciated!!!

Well, for one, that isn't really drilled to snap (a better drilling would have been pin over ring), and also, the UI is NOT designed to snap.  It's supposed to arc, in heavier oils.

I just put holes in an Ultimate this week.  I actually had a UI last year, drilled 5 x 5, but I could never get a good look with it, despite changing surface preps from 400 sanded to highly polished and everywhere in-between.  I got to talking to a pro shop operator that I know, and he said that the UIs that he had drilled that had been most successful have had the pin no further than 4 1/2" from the PAP, with the cover smoothed but not polished.  So I drilled the new Ultimate 2L, and took the cover up to 1200, and it's amazing just how much better it reads the lane than my old Ultimate did.

Last year, someone on this forum posted their belief that the UI was *too* versatile, just because of the rather large difference in reaction that can be obtained from a relatively small change to the surface prep.  So if at first we don't succeed, tweak, tweak again.
