For me the Smokin' went a little longer and turned a little more sharply.  Awesome ball for that type of reaction.
The Rampage is a hybrid cover (red is solid, gold is pearl) so it has the potential to "even out" the turn if you'll keep the cover a little stronger...  Maybe 2000 abralon, instead of polish.
Both are very nice to have.

which ball, for you, worked better on a medium to medium dry shot?

In my opinion, the Smokin' is one of the best on the medium-dry shots.  The Activator Advance cover pushes down the lane with ease.  If you've got slower ball speed, then the ball will handle more oil than you'd expect.  I just thought mine was exceptional with carrying the corner pins.

I really don't think you can go wrong with either one, but my Scorchin' was a little more angular, if that type of ball fits your game.  On the other hand, the Rampage is terribly under-rated, and we sell them for about $50 less than the Inferno line...

The Smokin is more of the skid/flip variety whereas the Rampage is more of the earlier roll and smoother backend reaction.

notclay,
They don't advertise the PK18 as being a hybrid on the Rampage, they list it as red/gold pearl pk18 reactive! I noticed that the Smokin does go a little longer and flips on the back and that's on the white pin. I liked the reaction on the white pin better, because of the added length. I know you do a lot of Big B drilling and didn't know if you had more info on the hybrid. The cover is like what was on my SmashR. Thanks, Bruce

batbowler,

I got the info. from Ric Hamlin on the Rampage.  He said they forgot to mention that in the promo material.  But, if you'll take a Rampage and remove the polish (maybe 1000, and then 2000 abralon) and look at the Red - then it looks like the solid I'm referring to.  The gold still looks like pearl, but there's a real difference on the red...

We've drilled several for ladies who want a step up in performance but are still throwing 12 and 13 lbs.  The men like it in the heavier weights, too, it's just a great ball in the mid-price range.

A few years back I had a Smokin' and a Rampage drilled identically (layout 2E from the drill sheet, with no balance hole), and I left both in box condition.  What I found was that the Smokin' was pushier in the midlane, and more angular in back, which made it slightly harder to control on conditions where I didn't have a defined dry area to the right or down the lane.  And while the Rampage was more controllable overall, it wasn't as good as the Smokin' at turning the corner when I had to get my feet deeper.

As far as total hook is concerned, I saw little difference between the two.

White pin has a harder/weaker cover.

The white pin smokin inferno went longer than the rampage. The original smokin hooks more than the rampage IMO. I have both of them and my rampage goes longer than the smokin.

This is true but my white pin is really strong. It out hooks my Total NV with a similar strength drill.

But why on the Big B web-site do they advertise the Sidewinder as the FIRST hybrid ball, solid and pearl?

Already answered that same question. Please read my other posts on this same thread...

By the way,
The Sidewinder is a solid/pearl/low-load particle hybrid
The Blast Zone is a solid/pearl hybrid
