Bill Wasserberger (Brunswick R&D) explained it well.  Back when the Rampage was released, the term "hybrid" was not commonplace in the industry.  Although the red is solid and the gold pearl, it took awhile before the industry started using the term hybrid.

If the ball were released today, the description on the ball would be a hybrid since the term is more widely used today.

Years ago when the Brunswick Proactive balls were introduced, the term "particle" was not being used either, although they were still particle balls by today's definition.  As the industry adopted the use of the "particle" name, Brunswick adapted it's terminology to avoid unnecessary confusion to the consumer.

Interesting about the solid/pearl mix in the rampages.  I just purchased one because it was much different looking from a lot of the others I had seen (mostly yellow)...  Guess mine is mostly pearl.. LOL.  Regardless, the ball rolls super...

I dunno.  The Hot Rod Hybrid was approved in December '04, the Rampage in June or July '05.  And the solid/pearl blends have been around for a long time.  Seems using "hybrid" for bowling balls is just capitalizing on the automotive buzz.

Hybrid is just a word.  Anyone can use it whenever they want.  I'm not implying that Brunswick is the first one to ever use it.

Solid Red and Yellow Pearl. It is a hybrid.

The Sidewinder is a PK-18 hybrid and the Blast Zone is a original Activator Hybrid.

Hope this clears up any discrepencies.

So its all PK-18 solid/pearl or is it a different mix of 1/2 & 1/2 ?

You know like the solid is PK-18 and the pearl is another type ?

I think it's safe to assume that it's PK-18.  I would, of course, defer to anyone who actually can say it 100%.  My understanding is that the "pearl" is an additive to the existing coverstock.
