Laying out a smokin for a customer. It probably wouldn't have been the ball I would have chosen for him to achieve the desired reaction, but its the ball he brought in for me to drill. I took him out on the lanes and watched him throw a few shots with his old equipment. After determining PAP, I looked at his layouts on his equipment... He had a stacked addiction (with a 4" pin to PAP with pin next to ring finger and MB next to thumb with weight hole) and a stacked element au79 (4.5" pin, above ring finger with a weight hole). I would say his ball speed is slightly greater than his rev rate... probably classified as a high end stroker.. I would estimate about 18 mph ball speed and around 275-300 rpms. The track on the ball was fairly close to the fingers /thumb, and the PAP measured out to be 5 1/4 --> and 1/2 ^.
After he threw a few shots and we talked, he explained that his addiction was very arcy and he generally used it for heavier oil, playing up the boards.. and his Au79 again was very arcy..and he used this ball for house shots and/or other medium oil conditions. He wants the smokin to "compliment" the AU79, but give him a more angular look.
From what I have seen, the smoking has decent length build in.. and if the backends are dry is fairly angular. With the higher speed and low-ish rev rate, I'm not sure how angular it will be for the customer, but should be more than the au79.
As far as layouts, what would you suggest? I'm thinking something similar to the 1L layout, but shifting the cg far enough out to leave sufficient side weight to use a "flare increasing" weight hole. Sound reasonable or should I go with a pin under fingers (as above may cause too much length)?

YES! Finally! Someone with the fortitude to drill this ball 1L.
thats what i plan on doing with mine eventually, 4" Pin 3.1 Top.
drill the smokin inferno to react how its supposed to.
it'll scream off the backend with 1L.

My Smokin' is 1L and it's a beast. Punch it up like that and you'll be surprised how versitle it is. It's a great set up.

Cool... that type of layout seems to be pretty versatile for most equipment (in my own experience)...

I wish mine was set up 1L, but I don't have the bankroll presently to plug and redrill.

It makes the ball very aggressive and a real snap at the pocket. I've never had a ball that hits this hard, except my Strike Zone.

Unfortunately, I traded for mine from someone who put the high rev layout on it with the Pin under bridge, and I'm a stroker. I use it for toast and when the lanes start to dry out. If I use it on oil, it burns up too much energy trying to read the lane earlier, and doesn't save enough for the big backend I was hoping for. I'll redrill it some time in the near future!

Absolute woulc be the ball for him.....
But since he already bought the Smoking.. it just might give him a different look on the lanes... its good to bag alot of differnt balls/drill/covers etc.. never know what you may run into out there.
i am drilling my Smoking Inferno more of a 3L .. with cg kicked out more to trade a little length for setup and back end..
on a 1-10 scale .. its about an 7.5-8 Length and 8 back end.. but more skid snap... drilling mine for medium dry spotty lanes.
Anyone else drill one similar? Hows it reacting?

Well.. I drilled it up last night for him... and am going to "deliver" it tonight in time for league... I'm sure he will be throwing it, so I will report back. I ended up basically going with the 1L...3 3/8 pin above/right fingers..and cg out enough to require weight hole. I went with the brunswick instructions on this one and placed a hole on the line from the pin 2 1/4" past the PAP... We will see how it rolls... I'm expecting it to be fairly strong for him!!! Thanks for the suggestions

good luck but if he can't get the au79 to snap with that drilling, my hopes aren't high for the smokin, but that's as snappy as you can drill it. (my au79 with some added polish, snaps very hard.)

about 90% of the posts on this site regarding the smokin have 2E layout on it.
all i ever hear about is 2E 2E 2E, have some balls and drill it for power.
its not an early rolling ball, forget smooth and controlled with this ball.
its all about jaw dropping angularity off the break.

I drilled my Smoking Inferno up today:
----.----
---O--O--
---------
--------x
---------
----O----
I set it up Legth with late set up and a strong arc /snap.. I set it up for medium dry lanes and it rolls fantastic.... never over reacts and absolutly hits like a truck, due to the core's energy saving abilities.
in my first 3 game test set.... riolled 279.. with one rining 10

well...the guy claimed it felt the best of any of this balls... Guess I did alright with the fit. It had a very similar appearance on the lanes to his AU79, but went about 2 ft longer with a little more backend. I would say a strong arc type of reaction and more angular than the au79. He was very pleased with the ball. I guess with his style and delivery, a little additional backend movement is an accomplishment...

Gotcha.
Out here, I've seen Smokin's with every imaginable layout. Generally speaking, the pin-above layouts seem to work equally as well as the pin-belows.

Personally, I think it's all about matchup...but hey, that's just me.
