static weight vs pin placement on Power groove

I picked up a single drill Power Groove in a trade.  The current drill is around 1 x 1 for my pap.

I was discussing this setup with my driller tonight.  I have a sonic X pearl drilled very, very close to this.  

He thinks that since the Sonic X has a true core in it, the pin placements matters quite a bit.  On the other hand, the PG has basically a hockey puck core which makes pin placement less significant.  He suggested I keep the same layout and drill the weight hole bigger for less sideweight.  I tend to agree.

What do you guys think?

I plan on using the ball as my dry lane ball(league mostly).

N_Smith-I went ahead and plugged it up.  I plan on drilling in like your first one.  Pin above middle, cg close to center of grip, around 0 side weight.  I will post after i get to throw it a few times.

Otherwise you would never know if it would work or not.


I wish I could have tried it.  I laid it out and actual measurement was 2 x 4.  I guess I thought the cg was in a different place.  Oh well, I am heading on vaction tomorrow, so hopefully it will done by sept 1.

I hope to get mine drilled tomorrow (chrome yellow).  If I do, I'll give you the details.  It will be a 5x2.  Pin 5" from the PAP, but pretty close to the VAL as opposed to over my bridge.  CG will be more or less stacked below, with a weighthole on the PAP.  Looking at the cover, I'm guessing I'm going to need to sand finer, then repolish.  I'll throw it against a Blue Hot Flame and a Slate Blue Gargoyle.

Got it drilled today - 4.5 x 2.  It looks like

More pop on the backend than my Blue Hot Flame and quite a bit more aggressive than my Slate Blue Gargoyle.  With the cover out of box, it's a great THS ball.  Length and flip + hit.  For $50, you can't beat it.  I wanted it for a dryer shot, so after getting home, I sanded to 1500, then polished to 3000.  I won't get another chance to use it before the tournament I bought it for.  I think I'll be fine.  The finer sanding + polish should get me the additional length I need while still maintaining it's snappier nature.  The urethane Gargoyle, arcing BHF, and flippy PG should give me plenty of dry options.
