Strike King Closeouts?
« on: April 05, 2016, 07:32:23 AM »
Hi,

I noticed that Buddies is selling Strike Kings at closeout prices.  Does anyone know if there are going to be color changes or will they be replaced altogether?

I've got a couple of Slingshots, one drilled pin-up and the other pin-down, so I've not been as tempted to get a(ny) Strike King(s). But I would venture to agree it's probably a very good value much like the Ringer series was.

I'm probably going to pick one up. Hope they're not going away. Definitely kills friction environments (most house shots and broken down patterns.)
League: Pitch Purple, Destiny Magenta

Looks like an old Columbia Beast. Should be great for broken down patterns. Personally, I love the Strike King, though! I also have one pin up and one pin down. I have scored very well in tournaments with these balls.

I picked up one for $40 from Buddies a few days ago.  Just got back from throwing it the first time.  Hopefully it looks better on a sport shot (or possible a fresh house shot), but it's much stronger than I expected (just like every other "weak" modern ball that I've bought).  I was hoping this would take the place of two light oils balls that I don't care for.  Both my Wicked Siege (lots of games on it, but keep it refreshed often) and Yeti got down lane easier (and had more hook down lane which I expected).  With the Strike King I was left of 4th arrow.  Any further right and as soon as it hit the dry it took an immediate left turn.  We'll see how it looks Sunday on the Nationals pattern...

That's bizarre in the extreme.
My SK goes longer than any other resin I own, including the Tropical Breeze hybrid and my older Brunswick balls: Slingshot, Loaded Revolver, and Anaconda (highly polished).

Are you sure your SK came polished?
Are you sure your Wicked siege and Yeti don't need an oil extraction?
I can't see the reason for what you're observing with the SK.

That's why I was surprised/disappointed.  I already have several "light oil" balls and most of them force you too far left, but then don't have the goods to come back with enough authority.  I really wanted something I could play straighter closer to the friction.

Yes, the Strike King is polished like you'd expect OOB.  The Wicked Siege was extracted 2-3 weeks ago and hasn't seen a lot of action since.  I've never done anything to the Yeti.  I just had the (new) pro shop re-do the thumb.  I didn't throw it much since I got it (50 games max) because it seemed very condition specific (I've only bowled sport shots the last 3-4 years), but part of that may have been that I was never very happy with the thumb - I'd throw it OK during a practice session, but never really trusted it when league would start.  I'll throw both Sunday on a fresh Nationals pattern - hopefully that will clear things up.

I have nothing left in my bag of tricks that can explain this.

As far as going long and still have something left on the backend for very light oil, the 2 best balls I have used are the Strike King and the Deep Freeze. The DF handles a bit more oil and has not as much length but more backend than the SK. If it makes any difference, both the SK and the DF are drilled pin in the ring for my 5x0 PAP. The next up more even reacting ball for light oil is my Tropical Breeze (now the Trop Storm) Hybrid.
(These seem to work for my rev-dominant style. If you're a matched speed/revs bowler, then you'd need stronger pearls/hybrids with more backend.  Possibly the Motiv Graffiti Tag - for polished solid it gets great length and a strong consistent large backend.)

You've got new ballitis.  Put a few more games onto your strike king and it will calm down
