Strike Zone
« on: March 24, 2006, 08:24:49 AM »
I haven't thrown much Brunswick in the last two-three years, but I do have a Zone Classic (green pin) that I really like.

In general...what have you guys seen with your Strike Zones?  How have you drilled them?  I've heard they should be fairly early and smooth, but I've seen a couple of guys throw one that looked fairly angular...not skid/snap, but stronger at the breakpoint than I would expect.  I don't know how they had theirs drilled...it was several months ago and the ball didn't interest me as much then.

Thanks in advance for any information you guys can provide.

I bought my Strike Zone as a ball for oily conditions. The drilling looks like this...
o o .

cg  .
 O
It was REALLY strong for me OOB condition, so I hit it with a 2000 Abralon pad. Now, I can control it much better, even on lots of oil. The ball has exceptional carry as well. My pro shop guy said it would be a good ball for me (bought it in Sept 2005 to replace a Full Throttle), and he was right on the money. Great ball for medium-oil to oily, IMO.
I'm kind of like you, stayed away from Brunswick, for whatever reason. Now, I'm considering getting another one, like a Smokin Inferno, for drier shots.

I have a Strike Zone with a 3-4 pin.  Drilled for early, aggressive roll on oily conditions.  Pin is about 1" outside of ring finger, cg just above and to the right of the thumb.  Pretty much the same as the "medium to oily" recommended drilling on the Brunswick data sheet  http://www.brunswickbowling.com/uploads/images/1513/Zone_Strike.pdf.

This ball can hook in oil, but with my drilling it burns out on drier lanes. I wouldn't recommend this drilling for anything below medium. When the lanes are fresh I play a down and in without having carry problems at all.  Once a little bit of oil is gone I go to more of a swing.  The ball has a smooth midlane transition, but still kicks in the backend.

I haven't seen anyone else in my area throwing it, but with my particular drilling I would guess that the ball wouldn't work well for those with low ball speed unless they have low revs.  I have thrown it slow a few times just to see what would happen, and it tended to have less forgivable snap in the backend.

All in all I've had a lot of success with this one when there's oil out there to use.  It isn't a skid-snap, but it does have backend.

Addendum:

I also had the ball tamed from OOB to 1200 grit.

My SZ is drilled pin right of ring, cg stacked. I've had it to 400 grit wet sand, and it was a monster in the oil. I've shined it, and used it on a broken down shot, medium oil. Right now it's 800 grit, and is a great ball for my house shot.

Likes about this ball- awesome carry, very predictable reaction, even arcing and rolling, very versitle. One of the best balls I've ever owned.

Dislikes- Absolutely nothing.

Yeah, it's a monster on the backend.  Most of the Zones tend to be almost skid/snap versions of the Infernos.  They're not supposed to be, I don't think, but that's sure the way they look to me.
