Big one Or Scorchine Inferno?
« on: February 16, 2006, 03:08:09 AM »
Just wanted some opinions on the two, I am thinking of getting one of these. Which one would hook more? I need some thing for real oily lanes. Thanks in advance for the feed back.

In theory, wouldn't the core in the Scorchin' be "rollier" by nature than the core in the Big One?  Therefore, generally, wouldn't the Scorchin', with the same layout, same surface prep, be generally "rollier" than the Big One?  However, if you want to talk overall hook, I would venture to say that at the same grit (lets say 1000 grit abralon, just for kicks) the Big One MIGHT hook more than the Scorchin', just from how strong everybody says the GB 11.2 cover is...IIRC, the Scorchin' comes in at 600 grit, the Big One at 4000, big difference.  All things considered, I again, generally, would say the Scorchin' would be "rollier" (though from what i've seen it does clear the heads quite nicely) whereas the Big One would probably make a bigger move on the backend.

--Disclaimer--

I have not thrown the Scorchin' Inferno, I have only thrown the Big One.  I have thrown a LOT of Ebonite gear in the last year and a half and only a sparce number of Big B balls, therefore it is possible that my opinion may be biased.  However, I do drill at a shop with a Hammer staffer, and we sell a lot of Brunswick gear (especially the Vapor Zones) and a lot of Ebonite gear (Ones, Big Times, Ices, etc.) so I try to keep my opinions as unbiased as I can.  Also, though I have thrown the big one, i've got less than 10 games on it so I definitely can NOT give a thorough review of the ball.  I doubt I will be drilling a Scorchin' because I do have some balls that are stronger than the Big One (all particle) and wouldn't have a need for the Scorchin'.  I think i've covered all bases, I'm done for now

Kind of a pickle if you ask me...

Most Brunswick guys would not throw Ebonite... and most Ebonite guys would not throw Brunswick...

Both will give their clear and concise opinion based on what they've thrown.

Hope that helps

Nick is right, it seems like the good/bad - yin/yang battle of Ebonite and Brunswick.
personally ive thrown 1 ebonite ball, the red wolf solid, i wasnt impressed at all.
1 havent tried an ebonite since then.

personally i think us Brunswick users are on the dark side, burning down the house the way we do with the Inferno series.

4000 versus 600 and pretty close at that surface. hmm, i think we could probably bridge the gap and get the big one stronger ,I venture to say alot stronger

tell you what  i have had both and there is no comparison scorchin inferno by far handles more oil than the one.

The box finish on the big one is 4000 and the scorchin is 600 grit. I have thrown the big one box finish and it hooks a ton at 4000. I can not imagine the big one at 600 grit. The scorchin is also reactive and not particle..

Its very for me to believe the scorchin inferno will hook more than the big one especially if both where the same grit, I just don't believe it, sorry..

As far as handling more oil, I guarantee the big one will no doubt handle more oil. That coverstock is GB11.2 and thats the highest amount of oil absorbtion for any cover of any ball on the market..

Jkiser i not going to argue in box on both is quite a bit different but i have to disagree i saw a guy throwing the big one last weekend and he had a bit of hand and it didnt impress me with its hookability by any means.  The hookiosity of the big one might be there for some on the big one but i was watching these fudgers hook the entire lane on same pattern with the scorchin..  To each is own though I wont discredit the big one the one was huge for me after i adjusted the cover and the big one im sure would be even bigger so they are both good choices.

The one thing you have to wonder though is would the Big One, if the surface is taken down to 600, be as continuous through the pins as the Scorchin' is. It's hard to have a ball that reads oil as well as the Scorchin' does and also continue to have strong downlane reaction. The Scorchin' seems to do both.

Greg,

What are your reasons for thinking that the Infernos are "actually weak assymetrics"? Semetry and assymetry are recognized by the core shape as viewed from the Pin. All Infernos, viewed from that point, have a core that mirrors itself all the way around. There is not one point on their cores that creates any imbalance when rotated 360 degress around when the pin is at the top dead center of the ball.

Not sure if that makes sense when put in words. I'm no R & D guy, so my description comes more from a pro shop guys vantage point. I can promise you this, we use absolutely no deception in marketing. There is nothing to be gained by us using "smoke & mirrors" to sell a ball.

Other than that, Greg, all your points were dead on as far as I'm concerned.
