Suggestions for my grandpa
« on: March 10, 2007, 04:06:01 AM »
My grandpa wants to get a new ball. I was thinking along the lines of a jolt pearl, but I don't know that much about different bowling balls.

He throws a lot slower than he used to but still gets his fingers into it and the last couple of bowling balls he has gotten have not satisfied his needs (Original X-factor used in x-condition and a new Brunswick Red Zone). My grandpa likes to stand center dot or right of center but because of his slower speeds these last couple of balls he has gotten he has had to stand all the way to the left. I am not sure how either are drilled, but with the way they reacted he thinks it's just the ball. He favors storm or brunswick bowling balls.

The house he bowls at has has a medium amount of oil on the lanes and the shot is typically second arrow. I do not know much about different balls or drill patters. My grandpa used to know a lot about different balls and patterns but with all the new technology out there he did not keep up.

Suggestions for a ball and drilling pattern would be greatly appreciated.

i would seem to me that your grandpa would need something that goes longer down the lane. how old is he ? how is his health in general ? what weight of ball does he throw ? he may need to drop to 14lbs. if he's been using 15 or 16lb. equipment. a highly polished wizard or rampage with the pin placed over his fingers would get the ball down the lane and have a moderate amount of track flare.

My grandpa uses a 14lb bowling ball. He is 75 and has had some health problems in the last couple of years. So far this year he has done a good job to gain some weight and built enough strength back to be able to bowl at least once every week.

it's possible your grandpa may need to go to a 13lb. ball. brunswick uses the same core in their 13lb. version of the rampage and the wizard. the rg is a little higher but that will get the ball down the lane a little farther. there is the same potential for track flare though as the rg differential is the same.

A couple suggestions come to mind. The Ebonite blue and black ice. The Brunswick Punisher.Storm Tropical series. Because of his age and ball speed I would go 5&1/2 to 6" pin to pap with a 135 degree backend.

If he has to stand left with a medium oil ball like an X-factor, you should look into a urethane or possibly a Lane 1 XXXL (plasitc with a good weight block in it). Something that gets down the lane and will roll up not, flip over. Maybe find a closeout Storm Hot Rod hybrid at the most!

What about a Power Groove? Should be able to adjust the coverstock to get the reaction you want and the ball is reasonably priced. I bowl on a "whoever shows up bowls" fun deal that you have to be over 55 to bowl on. Alot of guys 80 and up. I gotta say it's really an inspiration to see these guys bowl. They could easily sit home in a chair and not get out and do anything. Most of them have very slow ball speeds and some of the balls hook alot. Needless to say they have a hard time making a tenpin. I'm just guessing here but I would think static weights are a much bigger influence with a slower ball speed. So it would be real important to get a driller who knows what he's doing. Good luck.
