A step under the Smokin'
« on: October 10, 2005, 11:07:05 AM »
My Smokin' is great on medium conditions;
I am considering buying a Punisher for playing when
the SI is too strong for med-dry conditions.
However, when I read the BTM ratings, both the balls
are rated 16-16 for length and backend.
So, according to BTM, are the balls very similar, or
according to Brunswick chart are the balls really
different?

Night, meet Day...

Punisher would be perfect.

I concur.  I carry a Punisher for conditions where the Smokin' is overreacting.

For me, the BTM ball reviews make great bathroom reading.  They're a great source of entertainment, but they certainly don't map to reality as I know it.

A friend has both the SI and the Punisher, both are drilled the same (pattren 2E, pin under ring). The SI reacts like a Punisher on steroids for more oil -edgy. Both make a very good complement, since their reaction is very similar - only with the SI being better suited for more oil and fresh lanes and the Punisher for later games and dry/medium-dry conditions.

Get both, drill them the same, and there you go!

If anything some styles might find there is too much gap between the Punisher and Smokin.  I think even the Rampage with a PK 18 cover would give you a compliment to the Smokin.

I have both the Rampage and the Smokin' with the same layout (2E from the Brunswick high-differential drill sheet), and the two are *very* close in reaction.  The differences are that the Rampage is pushier in the midlane, and sharper at the break.  Because of this, I'll use the Smokin' on broken-down conditions where I need to bump left and play from the oil to the dry, and the Rampage when I have to get my feet very deep inside and I need something in my hand that I can count on to recover from anywhere.
