Switching to Brunswick ...
« on: June 05, 2012, 11:07:11 PM »
Out of all the new balls out, from what I have seen, I have been the most impressed with Brunswick, so I decided to try 2 or 3 and see what happens. I ordered the Versa - Max from local pro shop (Anne Marie Duggan's Pro Shop) today. It shoud be in and she will drill it early next week.

I plan to follow it with the Nexxus and will then wait and see how it goes and go from there.

Back in the 1980's and 1990's I threw Brunswick almost exclusively and always thought they were the best balls made as they seemed to really match up for me well. Then beginning around 2000, I started dabbling in a bit of every thing (Lane 1, AMF, Track, Ebonite, and Storm) after Brunswick quit making the Quantums.

I hope it all works out well for me.

Good luck the the Brunswick balls. The Versa-Max has such a smooth reaction on the lane! Also, the Nexxus f(p+r) is a very strong reacting ball on the backend of the lane.

Welcome back!! The Versa-Max is an amazing ball and I have two drilled and may add a third!!! The Nexus and Nexxus is the best for med/heavy to heavy oil that still can turn the corner!! I would say good luck with your new Brunswick balls, but you won't need luck now!!!! Just my $.02, Bruce

I made at least 80% of all the money I ever made bowling using Brunswick equipment in the late 90's.  Danger Zone, Impact Zone, Deep Violet, all made me thousands of dollars.  Since the Vapor Zone I have only had a couple of B balls that were really very good, and one was the Anaconda, a remake of the Abolute Inferno.  However I recently drilled the Versa Max and P+R .  Very impressed with both of them.  On the other side of the scale, top end Storm equipment ( Invasion, Virtual Energy, Anarchy, Nano, and Nano Pearl ) have not matched up well for me in the last couple of years.  Only the mid priced symetrical Frantic  has been good for me.

I find it interesting that two of the best balls right now from both Brunswick and Storm are mid priced symetricals with tamer shells.  Could it be that shells have gotten so strong that they don't match up well with the low rg, highly asymetrical cores they are typical of high end equipment.

Welcome back! To echo what others have said, you really can't go wrong with the Versa. I have two and I am debating on a third. Just put one of your reliable layouts on it and watch it get to work. I've tried mine at 3 different surfaces and the ball still reacts great no matter what grit I choose to go with. Currently mine are at 2000 and 4000 and both give me the best looks out of any ball on the Nationals pattern. The Nexxus and Versa are a great 1-2 punch. Hard to go wrong with those two balls in general. I will say that after you try out the Versa and get the Nexxus, you might want to wait until the info release date of June 22 for the new stuff in case something catches your eye!

Every ball I am using is Brunswick. It wasn't intentional, it just worked out that way.  Right now my favorite is the C System 2.5. It works on any shot.

My pro shop drilled my Versa - Max Monday. Tried it in league yesterday. I didn't shoot FIGJAM scores out to the box as I had a bit of problem with my speed and release having dropped to 14# on this ball.

However, this ball is definitely a winner as I could not get over how well it cleared the heads and then the strong continous move it made on the back-end. It gave me a really great look on the back-end that I have never had in the past with Brunswick balls. When this ball sniffs the dry on the back-end, "get out of the way" as this ball is going to move and I mean really move. Not snap, but a good strong-sharp continous move. I want to add one last thing here, and that is the pin action. I've had balls that create some pin action, but I don't recall ever having a ball that creates the pin action this ball does when it hits the pocket.

Let me add one last thing here and that is I tried it for a few throws after drilling on Monday on lanes that hadn't been oiled since Saturday and it still cleared the heads and moved on the back end without "roll-out", so based on that and the fresh-oil lanes yesterday, this ball is definitely going to be very versatile and the first ball out of my bag.

Anxious to add my next Brunswick ball to my arsenal to replace probably my Nano and then a drier lane ball later after that. It will probably be some time in July before my next move here.
