Drilling Advice/Suggestions
« on: April 21, 2008, 01:35:49 AM »
I have a friend who I always struggle to drill equipment for.

In general he has the following characteristics ... low speed, high rev rate, high axis of rotation, and very little tilt.  His PAP is 5 1/2" x 3/4" up.

In the houses that we bowl in, drilling strong equipment for his is out of the question.

I was thinking of drilling him up a twisted fury, since it supposedly has "built in length".  My real question is, are there any options for drilling stuff weaker other than say 6 x 4 or pin over the bridge, and CG in the palm?  I tried drilling him a complete NV with a RICO drilling, but he can't use it because it just hooks too much for him.  In the last 3 or 4 years the only balls that he has had success with are the Paradigm and the Neptune.  Even the paradigm needed some breaking in to tame down the reaction.

I was thinking of putting the pin closer to his PAP for a change.  Anyone have any suggestions?

I used to have a ball that was drilled 2" from the PAP and the ball rolled early and the late movement was very controlled. The ball was a Wizard (PK18 solid).
Low speed and high revs is a very difficult combination. With slow ball speed and high revs, pearl reactives are going to be less predictable the last 15 feet of lane. Any ball that goes longer is usually more angular at the break point.
Does he have a solid reactive that you can plug and re-drill 2" from the PAP as an experiment? Try it around 1000 - 1500 grit first, then you can always add some polish if needed to enhance carry. That is an inexpensive way to "test the waters" with that layout.
In the long run your friend may need to pick up the ball speed by freeing up his arm swing, etc. so he can still rev it up and be comfortable. Good luck.
