What is his PAP? If it flared backwards, it sounds as if his PAP might be close to 6", as placing the pin in the palm, sounds as if it is close enough to his track that it pulled it towards the grip.
If he wants to use this layout and his PAP is close to 6", you may shift the pin over 1" or so from grip center, away from his track.
You can also increase the weight hole size.
And remember, for the true reaction for this layout, THE WEIGHT HOLE IS NECESSARY. That is what creates the asymmetry or strength. You are placing the weight hole 6 3/4" from the primary pin, which increases the overall strength of the core.
"Rico" layout is pin in the palm, cg at a 45 degrees and WEIGHT HOLE at 6 3/4", from the pin through the CG, at 45 degrees. The weight hole has to be deep enough to hit the core to affect it. Statics are irrelevant and do not effect reaction nor should they dictate weight hole, it is necessary to enhance or create reaction and is a must for this reaction.
