Have-a-Ball League Need Help on chossing 2 balls.
« on: May 30, 2006, 06:28:14 AM »
Hello,

Im new to this forum but Ive been bowling since I was 14 yrs old and im now 20. I currently use the old Coloumbia 300 Titanium Messanger Pearl. I as of now avrg 180-190 but  just recently got back into bowling.

Im a righty and bowl with two-fingers I thrwo pretty damn hard even compared to ppl quite a bit bigger than me. Also I have a TON of revs from what some pro shops have told me since seeing me bowl. I normally stand in the middle and roll the ball out to about the 5 about 70% down the lane and then it swings back to pocket. BUT thats only on medium-dry or dry lanes which is what i was told that ball was made for.

Since Ive gotten to strong for this ball and im not even making it back to pocket unless I throw it alot slower which makes me feel like i have less control over it for some reason.

Now to the topic at hand Im ina  Have-a-Ball league at my Brunswick Zone and we get to choose 2 balls. The balls are: Any Inferno, Any Zone, Any BVP, Any Target, The One and the Big One. Ive bowled with the Big One and it have a rounded arc with the way I bowl which I really dont like. But I recently bowled with the Scorchin' Inferno and the ppl that avrg 220+ in my league said that was the perfect ball for me after I threw it cuz they said they never have seen any one throw one with so much curve and hitting power thats not a pro. So I know I want that ball.

Now I need a ball to complement it when it starts reacting too early. And  do have the Messenger for dryer lanes so I need something for the middle. Any thoughts I kinda wanted the Goliath but Ive never thrown it. And I got a very aggressive hook with the Vapor Zone when I tried it. I need a ball that can make it back to pocket with the amount of speed I put on the ball. Also I dont wnat 2 Infernos cuz that cost $50 more.

Ok Strider thx for that statement. I will try to explain as best I can. My Punisher was drilled the same way as my Messanger and I use them both on Dry conditions when I compared the two before I sold the punisher.

The messanger will come back to pocket with a huge backend when I throw at my comfortable speed(which is pretty hard considering im only 160lbs and im 5'8'' but im told I throw very hard). The punisher when thrown the same by me in the same conditions still was skating down the lane to far and hitting right of the pocket and most times not even hitting the headpin. I dont like to have to slow my speed down just to hit pocket with a ball which is what the punisher made me do quite a bit. Now if that doesnt amke sense I cant say anything else cuz thats whats happening with me.

Now I sold it to my left handed friend who throw softer than me and and has alot less revs than me but he gets great backend with the punisher that I cant get. Works for him and not fo me I guess.

Moving on just to try to make it clearer. I dont think im your avrg young 2 finger bowler. I dont stand on the far elft side and swing the ball out to the gutter and bring it back. I stand in the middle or a bit right of middle depending on balla dn conditions. My avrg is around 190 right now but Ive been struggling with only 1 ball which happends to be a dry lane ball.

I recently tried out the Big One, Scorchin Inferno, Paradigm, Absolute Inferno, Strike Zone and the Vapor Zone.

Each I used for one game on oily just re-oiled lanes(i ahd 4 lanes to try). All with under 10 gmaes on them(the owner of the brunswick let me try them). The Big One, Paradigm, Strike Zone, and Paradigm didnt work well for me(didnt really hook except for the Big One). On the other hand the other two worked great. Now the owner was watching bowl with them and when I threw the Scrochin' he clapped and said that was one of the scariest hooks hes seen someone throw with my kind of speed(may of just hit a big dry spot). And same for the Vapor zone. I actually had to serveral times try to increase my speed to keep up with amount of hook with these two.

Now the absolute I threw and it started to turn back to pocket but stopped and went str8 with the boards of the lane every time i threw it. alot of reveiws ppl dont like the Scrochin but it works great for me.

Strider, you know more than me about bowling but could it be that different balls do work some ways for others and the opposite for someone else.

so your style is more similar to Jim Pratt except he uses a dynothane plastic ball down first arrow into pocket...

not tryna be offensive and i hope you don't take it personal but did u try slowing down. giving the ball more time to react might be what you need.

ImaRedBird, LOL I am taking everything u all are saying in. Im want to get alot better. I bowl about 3 times a weeks bymyself or with friends. And yes
I do slow the ball down. I just tend to not be consistant while doing it. The punisher needed me to slow down by alot to get it back to pcoket. Ive gotten so use to my throwing speed that its feel "natural" now and throwing it slow seems a bit weird. Id have to admit I kind of in love with alot of backend mixed with alot of pin action that comes with some of the speed . Its more like I go for the 2nd arrow(while standing ont he middle dot) and it go to about the 3-5 board and swings into pocket kinda late. The punisher went to the 3-5 boards and only recovers maybe 3-4 boards b4 hitting the pins. I dont know really why it doesnt work for me. Now when the lanes are very oily I step over 1 or 2 dots and throw down the first arrow and it swings into pocket. The Punisher actually work a bit when I did that but didnt hit as hard as the messanger.

i understand that. i use to fly down the lanes, but i had to slow it down, and all of my equipment, be the lanes xtremely oiled or mid dry, come crashing back to pocket. However i see the only good time that speed is really needed is when it is dry out and that's when you go at it.

i wouldn;t advise the scorchin inferno - for me it leaves wayy too many ten pins and for a righty - its pretty hard to hit them. i would advise you to look at all the inferno's completely.

the BVP Ambush is a great second ball - i use it to pick up all my spares - including the ten. its a very versatile ball and will give you what you need as a spare ball. i say that is one of the best MID PERFORMANCE balls out there.

Well it kind off too late but the scorchin works completey with my preference. 10 pins..... those a very easy with my messenger. I didnt need a spare ball my messenger takes care of pretty much everything that I can normally leave. I get complemnets on how good I am on spares when im only a 2 finger bowler.

I was looking for 2 strong balls for heavy then medium oiled lanes for strikes.

I tried a treatment that I read up on here to get the oil out of my old messenger and it actually worked very well. I tried it out on the regualer house shot and it was very agressive. Atleast 4-9 boards more than it has been in the last year.
