New Bowler

My Wife and I have decided to take up bowling.  We looked on line for balls and the differences between them.  Since my wife has never bowled before, we ordered her a simple plastic ball.  For myself, however, I wanted one that would help me start to learn how to hooks the ball. I decided on the Groove Urethane ball one because of the reviews that it would be good for a beginner, and two because of the price.  I had also looked at the Power Groove ball.  I'm wondering if anybody has any insights to these two balls, and if one is better than the other, and did I make a good choice in products, or is there something else out there that would better suit my needs.

Well if you want to start hooking, get a ball that hooks.  I hear Fury solids hook & are relatively cheap from on-line venues.

I'm more familier with the power grooves because they are what our proshop sells or at least did. But for a beginner thats a great ball and would recommend it or a Storm Tropical storm. Either one of those are great for beginners and will help you get your timing and other bowling fundementals down. then once you learn to play a certain way and want to upgrade your proshop can help suggest for you a ball that best suits your style and needs.

My .02.. If your starting out, just get yourself a low end -mid-line ball..Grooves are a great ball to start out with, even anything from the BVP lines..Save the money for some coaching.. Good luck..

I would suggest something simple such as the  BVP  Ambush. Not a lot of hook but enough to teach a new bowler how to control the ball when hooking. Good luck with the bowling!

Every post has been great advice, except the 1st post about getting a fury. Id like to stuff a fury bowling ball in a cannon and fire it at that dude groin area! What are you thinking telling a beginner bowler to buy a $200 ball!?

A brunswick power groove, columbia 300 Scout reactive, storm tropical series and im forgetting a few other companies but those are all great beginner hook balls with great pricing. You made the right choie in ball.

Now you asked what the difference is between plastic and the groove. The plastic ball has well a hard plastic cover with a pancake core which is located were the pin is at, the ball will usually be drilled with the pancake being in the bowlers hand for better stability and to ensure the ball will roll down lane without wobble. The Power Groove has a basic weight block with a Pin and CG. You can make the ball do different things depending on where you put the pin around the finger holes. I could get more detailed with this but seeing as your new to the sport, I will not confuse you or bore you with that information.

For a beginner you made the right choice. I have started many people out in Power Grooves, Tornados, and Scouts. For somebody new into the sport it is a great piece of equipment that you can learn from and grow with. The Urethane version may limit a little but not much. Personally anything above these could be to much to start of with. Good luck and keep us updated on how things are going and welcome to this great sport.
