Ultimate, dead?
« on: May 14, 2006, 04:28:05 AM »
Over the past 2 weeks or so my Ultimate Inferno has been giving me an awful reaction in any oil what so ever. It doesn't even want to grip the lanes. I sanded it a couple of times and I basically get the same reaction as before. My Zone Classic as of right now is out hooking it. So I've come to the conclusion that it is "soaked". I've talked to one of the Coaches of our Travel league in the area and he said it's not even worth trying to get back to original condition by "baking" or some of the other products for this on the market. So what do you all think? is it worth it to get it worked on? Or should I just invest my money into a Strike Zone?

Thanks!

If you choose to bake it be careful (not too hot, not too long). Soaking it hot water and cleaner (dish soap always worked for me) in the tub for a few minutes works well. Afterwards have your pro shop put the surface back to the desired surface and should be good as new. Then tell your coach to give you $$ for another ball.

I had similar problems with both my Inferno's. My Ultimate died after about a year and I soaked it in hot water for a few minutes, gave it a good cleaning when the pores were opened up, sanded it back down to OOB finish and it was as good as new. My Absolute didn't fair as well. It just doesn't move at all on any oil. Redrilled it semi-pin axis and it serves as my spareball and dry lane ball now.

Unless they've changed their stance, Brunswick recommends heat to remove oil from their balls.  If you can't find a shop with a Rejuvenator, do a hot water soak at home.  Done correctly, you'll get a near new ball; plus it sounds like you don't have much to lose as it is.  There have been tons of posts describing the best methods.  Do a search in the Brunswick or Miscellaneous forums.

My Scorchin Inferno was pretty oiled up too, it was still hooking maybe not what it once did but I sure wasn't getting the strikes like I was before.

It would turn in alright but not with the authority that it used to so I would crush the pocket and leave the 7-10 or get the dreaded 10 pin and this would happen right after the first game in league.

So yesterday I gave it the hot water bath (everyone has their own way of doing it)
and this is how I did it: submerged the ball with the holes facing up and the water ring just around the holes so I could get most of the ball wet without worrying about the water getting into the finger/thumb holes

then after 30 minutes of soaking I pulled it out and wiped it off with a clean dry towel then after wiping it off I immeditly wiped it off with rubbing alcohol
(isopropyl 70%) I applied the isopropyl very liberaly and then I put the ball back into the hot water bucket and let her soak again

this time for 20 minutes and the did the same steps as mentioned above. Then I left it to dry turned upside down, holes facing the floor (a little water seeped in) until I went bowling this morning.

The lanes were pretty typical at where I practiced and usually the SI will last one whole game and then like clock work I will start leaving big-bad splits and the ringing 10 pin after crushing the pocket, well, today I bowled 7 straight games and bowled great and I still could have used the SI after just moving at the most 2/3 boards left but I wanted to try my other balls.

This hot water treatment on my SI could not have work any better. I was striking all day in every game. Sorry for the long post but maybe this would work for you too, good luck!

I must chime in on this topic!  My wife has had her UI for almost 3 years, and she bowls 3 nights a week.  I can't get her to put it down for the most part.  With league play, tournament, and open play, this ball easily has over 1,000 games on it.  I put it in the dishwasher at least once a month, clean it with Track Clean n Dull, hit it with a grey pad, or 500 Abralon, and it STILL outhooks anything I've got in my bag!!  If you keep it clean, this has got to be the best coverstock around!  IMO!!!

The proshop where I get all my stuff, they have this warm-air oven type thing (might be a Rejuvenator) where they bake the balls at 50 degrees Celsius (that's 122 degrees Fahrenheit)for about 10-15 minutes. Take it out and clean the surface with Isopropyl, repeats the procedure until the ball doesn't sweat out any more oil...

how many games are on the ball ? it might be time for a resurface and a pass through the rejuvenator. these will bring your ball back like new.

Sounds like your coach is giving you bad advice. I would try baking it or soaking it in hot water. Both methods are free so I dont see how it wouldnt be worth it.

Yeah, if it's not working anymore, why not at least try to fix it before you go out and buy something else. Just make sure you do it correctly, and if it doesn't work, then invest in something new.

Columbia CPR works pretty well.  I resurfaced my Absolute, then used a CPR and the ball came right back to life.  And might I add, has lasted more games this time around than previously when it needed revival.

I would do what other people suggested. The hot water bath. I did the hot water bath on my mom's phenom that had 2 and a half seasons on it. After the bath the ball was as strong on the backend as it was right out of the box. It wont cost you nothing except some time.  can't hurt to try.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm not to sure how many games I got on it. But league, tournament and open play since I got it, around July or August last year I believe.

I'm gonna try the hot water one first.

Yes, i try the CPR on my UI (over 150 games)
and it back to 85-90% OOB reaction. I will try it on my II too.

Does anyone know how many balls the CPR System sold on Buddies and BowlingBall.com will do? It costs about $20 after shipping, but doesn't say how many balls the system will revive.
